Three Posing Tips

“Number one, it runs through my mind it is very BobbyNorthAmercansobvious that I am the king. Then I thought to the audience, just keep screaming now because you’re going to see the poses for just a few minutes here, so eat your hearts out.” ~ Arnold

As I sat watching the Titans show this past weekend I had several conversations with others in the audience about how off the posing was in every category.  Many competitors spend so much time on building their physiques only to neglect the other components of competing such as posing.  You do yourselves a disservice to put 12-16 weeks of training in only to blow it by deciding you aren’t going to take your posing just as seriously.

We systematically train our bodies to achieve a specific result.  You should also systematically practice your posing to achieve a specific result…stage presence.  Our category is filled with many great physiques but stage presence is what makes you stand out on stage.   Some are blessed with it naturally but most need the practice.  If you’re not blessed with it then the only way to achieve it is by practice.

  1. Make posing a part of your workouts.  If you notice bodybuilders typically practice their poses between their sets.  You as competitors should do the same.  Will people stare and maybe make fun of you, yes, but who cares.  It’s you who has to step on stage, not them.  After your workout take 10 minutes to go through your quarter turns.  You will thank yourself come show time.
  2. Become a student of the sport.  Go through pictures and videos from competitions to find competitors with a similar build to you who seem to be great on stage.  Find who that person is and copy what they do.  There’s no need to reinvent the wheel here.
  3.  Find a good coach.  We have all discussed the numerous coaches out there claiming to be Men’s Physique coaches who have never done a show and never trained a Physique competitor in their lives.  If you’re willing to spend you hard earned money on being someone’s experiment then knock yourselves out; but, I’d prefer to find someone who knows what they’re doing so you look like you know what you’re doing.

Hopefully that helps a bit with only a few weeks left in the 2011 season.  Train hard, eat clean & PLEASE practice posing.
