Future Figure Star: Jessica Smith

An Interview With Future Figure Star Jessica Smith

Story By Rob Rosetti

DSC_0067They call her "The Wasp"and if you have ever seen her on stage you will know why her nickname suits her so well!  Meet up and coming National NPC Figure Athlete Jessica Smith.

When figure athletes take the stage, one of the first things that stands out is the shoulder to waist ratio. The wider the shoulders and narrower the waist, the more impressive an athlete appears if their conditioning is spot on. In the pit we call this "The Wasp Effect".  Jessica Smith is one of those athletes that could be considered the "Queen Wasp".

Born in her native country Brazil, Jessica will be one of the many NPC Figure Athletes competing in Atlanta this weekend.  It's my guess that she "will" get noticed.  Her incredibly small waist, broad shoulders and exotic hispanic looks will radiate on stage.

I had the opportunity last week to photograph and interview Jessica in Daytona Beach, FL.  Not only does her physique rock but she is a pleasure to work with and has one of the best competitor attitudes I have come across.

This weekend Jessica will head to Atlanta for NPC Nationals and compete in the Figure F Class.  Just a hunch, but I think Jessica will make a very good impression on stage.

Here is her exclusive Rx Girl interview:

4.  When did you get interested in competing in NPC Figure?

After I picked up my first issue of Oxygen Magazine three years ago. I looked at the cover and said " I want to look like this!!"  So I hired a trainer who introduced me to weight training.

5.  When did you start competing?  What shows have you done and how did you do?

My very first show was September 2008 Lakeland Classic and took 2nd, since then I have done Hurricane Bay, Southeastern USA, and Nationals 2009-placing in the top 5.

6.  What part of competing do you like best?

Bringing the final package to the stage... that 5 min's of fame!

7.  Are you an easy gainer or slow gainer?

I would say that I make pretty easy gains, but I definitely have to eat!! I have a pretty quick metabolism so I have to be careful to watch my calorie intake..

DSC_01358. I hear you have a pretty popular Bodybuilding boyfriend.  Do you think it's easier or harder to compete when you are dating someone also competing in the sport?

Definitely easier.  We are very supportive of one another, and it doesn't hurt that our fridge has clean food at all times =)

9.  Describe your typical day.

Sheer Madness!!! I wake up bright and early at 5 am and hit the gym for cardio session, come home and get ready, pack both mine and my daughters food for the day and get her and myself ready. I drop her off and then it's off to work for me as a Dental Assistant.  I usually try and get in some sort of training on my break if time allows, otherwise after I'm off it's straight to pick Milaan up and then to the gym.  We normally get home about 7:30 eat our dinners, get ready for bed, bed time stories and REPEAT.  I wouldn't have it any other way... I love staying busy, each day is a sense of accomplishment!

10.  When you have a meltdown who usually picks you back up by the boot straps?

Meltdown? haha...  My boyfriend. He can relate to the emotional toll dieting can take on you sometimes... he def. has a way of talking sense back into me.

11.  If you were to choose someone in the IFBB Figure ranks that you think your body most resembles who would that be?

Candace Keen
