Don't Inhibit Your Day Job

It 299355 2251441619248 1644489329 2294094 86502208 n(1)truly is amazing to see all of the new life that Men’s Physique is bringing into the competition realm of the National Physique Committee (NPC) and the International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB), literally growing by the day! Seeing so many who stopped competing, are changing divisions, and never have competed entering into contests week after week says a lot for the division and it’s excitement! With there being so many new to the sport, there also comes a lot of people with overall inexperience and sometimes with inexperience can come ignorance, this is where looking at those that have been successful within the industry for a long time and learning from their mistakes/successes and adding your own twist is crucial! If you want to know the best way to climb a mountain, ask someone who has done it before! Having been involved with the NPC for over 13 years now and always trying to stress balance in life, I feel that it is very important to discuss how the Fitness Lifestyle can and will enhance all other aspects of your life as long as you let it! Conversely, it can also tear you down if you don’t strive to find proper balance.

All things in our lives are centered around balance and going too far to one side will always neglect the opposite sides, so finding the middle ground is crucial for our longevity, whether it be in Fitness, Friendships, Careers, Relationships, Education, Etc… For the purpose of this article I would like to focus on the aspects of our career(s) and how vital it is to not neglect a large aspect of our livelihood for the sake of competing. I want to be VERY clear here in that it is very possible to have a successful career while at the same time being successful in fitness, they are NOT mutually exclusive! It is not even necessary to have a totally related career to fitness for success in competitions and with some it actually helps not to! Do not let those that say it is not possible stand in the way of you doing it!

While successful training requires 100% commitment and effort for success, that does not mean that it is the only thing that we can do, it is all in how we look at it! When the 100% encompasses our lives and it is a part of us, it then becomes a part of our grand goal. When we turn it into a this or that scenario, we are destined to fail at one from the start! First and foremost, it is very important to set a reasonable goal and timeline. As an example; if you have never competed before and you also have an increased workload at your job, it probably is not the best time to commit to a contest. The more experienced we become, the more we know just what is reasonable for us, that is why you may see some people that are able to do a lot all at once and that simple is because their 100% can encompass a lot more, because they know it can from experience. As you become more experienced in balance and add slowly to it, your 100% will also grow!

Over the years I have seen far too many people fall prey to the subjective nature of the sport and begin the downward spiral of allowing their extreme focus and desire to be regarded as a certain number or placing in someone else’s eyes that they allow it to consume them, shifting their balance so far to one end that it can be a difficult and lengthy process to climb out. You do not need a high placing or to turn pro to be successful in this industry, and by placing high and becoming pro does NOT in any way, shape, or form guarantee success! It is very similar to how there are many successful people who obtain degrees and lengthy education, but there are also many successful people who do not! Success is all about what you bring to the table, not a trophy, not a piece of paper! Please don’t take this as me saying you shouldn’t obtain education, I believe that true education is NEVER a waste of time and should always be pursued. My point is that there are those that take it in and truly learn and there are those that go through the same motions, but learn nothing! But to the onlooker it may be difficult initially to tell the difference and this is where who and what we are truly makes the difference!

This is the main reason that with all of the people that I come in contact with and aim to inspire that I practice and preach that the Fitness Lifestyle is about the Journey and the stage is just a step in the Journey. If you have fun and enjoy what you are doing 90% of the time and have to force it 10% of the time, then you are on the right track! However, if those figures are flipped, it is time to make some serious changes! Life is too short and too precious to waste a minute not being happy and the fact is that we are ultimately responsible for our own happiness shows that if we do not make the most of it, we are wasting the most precious gift that we could be given… Life!

Always strive to increase your 100% and over time you will learn what you want and are able to include within it, but never neglect balance… Never neglect yourself!

“Just as your car runs more smoothly and requires less energy to go faster and farther when the wheels are in perfect alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, emotions, goals, and values are in balance.”
