Bizzaro World: THE LIFE

I’vegraded lessons book been wanting to write this for quite some time. It amazes me how times change and the way people’s perceptions of things change. We also become more knowledgeable and unfortunately we also become less knowledgeable. We see examples of it all around in our society today. I believe we are living in a Bizzaro World. The topic I would like to touch on here is the way we view foods and health.

100 years ago the average person was more knowledgeable about food and healthy eating than we are these days.  The average person 100 years ago could tell you what was healthy and what was not. People ate foods that the body needed for energy and to survive, not for satisfaction. Being healthy 100 years ago was the norm while in today’s society if you are healthy you are weird or must have good genetics.  If I had a dollar for every time someone made a comment about the healthy foods I eat I would be rich. Comments like “How can you eat so much chicken?” or “How can you eat healthy all the time” or “Don’t you get tired of always eating healthy”. When did eating the foods that our bodies are designed to handle become unusual? When did eating foods that are destroying our bodies become normal?? About 100 years ago a book was used in Texas schools in 1908 written by physician, Dr. William Khron, Graded Lessons in Physiology and Hygiene. It’s amazing the common sense knowledge we have lost when it comes to the foods we eat. Much of this is due to us putting our trust into the government and the food manufactures and their marketing. Here is some of the common sense we knew about foods.

We knew that “excessive amounts of sugar cause the liver to be overworked and a bilious attack results” (page 37).
We knew that excessive starch should be avoided and that vegetable oils were not healthy. “The cereals, as oats, corn, and rice, are chiefly starch. Rice contains about ninety percent starch. Corn contains more fat than the other grains, but all vegetable fat is hard to digest, and is of little value as food” (page 34).

Here’s another excerpt from the book. “Many of our foods are sometimes spoiled by persons who manufacture or sell them, putting into them cheaper substances that are dangerous to health. Such persons seem to care little for the purity of foods, but are chiefly interested in making the most money possible out of them. So common has this adulteration become that in most of the states the law-making power has passed pure food bills to prevent the sale of such adulterated articles. These laws are most worthy and should be strictly enforced, for what is money-making by a few individuals compared with the health of the people of an entire city or state, which may be greatly endangered by the use of these impure or adulterated foods” (page 38)?

“Sugar, syrup, and candy are sometimes made from corn by a peculiar process, by means of which the starch of the corn is changed into glucose, and a kind of sugar not so sweet or healthful as sugar made from sugar-cane or sugar beets. This sugar is quite apt to ferment, or sour, and decay within the bowels, thus causing disease. Some candies are colored with poisonous matter” (page 39).

So as I sit here in Bizzaro World writing this article I wonder how we got to such a point where we let our own ignorance shorten our life span and has put us in this obesity epidemic. Where people want to say it’s not a choice, but a disease. A society where we want to blame everyone else but ourselves? Where we are raising the next generation to be the first one to not outlive the previous group? Where we complain about health care without caring about our own health? When did it become strange for someone to eat the foods that were designed for our bodies while we poison our body by choice. Why am I the odd one?? The explanation is because I am in Bizzaro World!
