Is it ok to incorporate P/V days from the start of the diet?

3 P/F days, 1 P/V day, then repeat?

DP:   Why suffer more than is necessary. If you can drop bodyfat by eating protein/fat every day, it's silly to make the diet harder than necessary. Plus, what will you do later if you hit a plateau?

Are you familiar with Art Atwood's new product Karbolyn?  It is potato based instead of corn based what do you think of it?

DP:  As far as I can tell, it's just new packaging for Vitargo - I don't want to restart this debate, but until someone does the research to prove me wrong, waxy maize is just as good.

DP:  There are many projects in the works............ a T.V. show version of HEAVY MUSCLE RADIO will probably be the next venture!

DP: Initially we will be doing paparazzi and interviews at the big shows.  Someday we might do stage shots and cover the shows from that angle.  Expect training video in the near future as soon as the site starts taking shape.

What's your opinion,test every 5th or 7th day?,if i'm thinking right cyp got just a little longer halftime than ena,so it shouldn't be a problem to inject every 7th?

DP:  I'm not a fan of Anadrol.  It's very toxic and will kill your appetite (not good if you're trying to grow). I would rather see you stack two injectables like test and deca or EQ.  The results you'll get on 250mg per week will be minimal. You might want to try at least 2- 250mg shots per week if you want to gain size.

What's your opinion on training volume for a natural bodybuilder?

I've done some reading on the topic and found that the volume needs to be less, is that true?

DP:  You have to be very careful.  A natural bodybuilder can overtrain much sooner than an enhanced athlete.  Focus on 2-3 intense sets per exercise.

Hey Dave, to get in ketosis we are supposed to have higher fat then protein intake. So that fat can be utilize as fuel.. Can we still get into strong ketosis without higher fat intake? I'm just asking for general knowledge [note: ive been following your diet for more than 4 months now] great result.. Sometimes on weekend i go crazy with carb orgy.. but i make sure is clean carb like sushi and for few meals.. is it really damaging ? i didnt stuff myself too full. i just split a few clean meal with carb(about 250g of carb over 2-3 meal) rather than one cheat meal .. is that alright ? because i would love to eat more variety of food on that day itself. thanks dave

DP: You could get into ketosis with no fat, but you would never survive.  Carb restriction is what gets your brain to switch into ketosis (using fats as fuel).  You have to take in fats for energy as well as their part in many essential functions in the body (including hormone production). You're ruining your diet with all the carbs.  My diet allows one moderate cheat meal per week.

DP:  Stay on the diet and if you can muster the energy try to get some low intensity cardio in.

DP: Stay on it for 16-20 weeks and then take a 4-6 week break.

I had my appendix out tuesday last(feb 3) via keyhole surgery and i wondered if you had a take on how long before i should train again, i have asked my doctors and surgeons etc and their answers were ambiguous to say the least...I myself am considering next monday for my eager return but dont want to risk an even more prolonging injury like a hernia or something like that!

DP:  You have to pin the doctors down for a solid answer.  That is their responsibility.

Im in my 5th week of a version of your diet and my weight loss has been slowing. My cardio has increased to 1hr this week and i am going to do 120min next week and start meltdown and chromium as well. DP:  You can find my diet at the beginning of the thread - no need to use a "version."  Increase cardio in 10min intervals each week if your fat loss slows. And chromium will not do anything unless you have a deficiency.

Omega3 eggs are exactly the same as regular eggs, except they have more omega 3 fatty acids (and less omega-6)

Dave, I am (currently, have cycled in past) training naturally, and seeing good results. As soon as everything goes smoothly, I get sick. It seems I cannot go more than 6-8 weeks without getting a heavy cold that knocks me to the couch for 4-5 days. I can't tell if it's training related or not, I train hard and often but I was wonder if you could recommend some advice/supplements for boosting my immune system? I've always kinda had problems with illness since I was a kid, but now I HATE losing a week in the gym that regularly.

DP: You need to time you rest periods in the gym.  6 weeks of consistent hard training seems to be too much for your body, so you need to plan a few days of rest every 12 weeks.

1- i'm a low volume high frequency guy... Last time i went on the diet, i got weaker and looked flat all throughout the diet. Is there anyway to avoid this other than increasing fat (I did that, nothing happened)? or do i just have to live with it?

 

2- If someone wanted to start the diet and he was already on moderate/high carb and let's say 3000 cals, does he immediately drop to around the 2000 cal mark with no carbs? or should he slowly take down the carbs week by week til he gets there and continue with the diet?

DP: You're always going to look a little flat without carbs, but you also look harder so it's a tradeoff.  I rarely have anyone report a loss of strength except for the last 4 weeks when the diet gets really tough.

I like to just jump right into the diet.  Tapering is just procrastinating.

5'7'' 196lbs. 13%b/f

Following you're Palumbo diet for 200lb male. 6-8 lites of water per day

Sensitive to androgens so wanna keep them fairly low as possible.

 

week 1-4 (40mg anavar per day)

week 1-16 (300mg equipoise per week)

week 1-16 (300mg test cypionate per week)

week 1-16 (2iu hgh 5 day's on two days off)

week 1-16 (1 ml kynoselen per day)

DP:  This is a weak cycle. There's really no need for a man to use Anavar.  If you want a really mild cycle, I would drop the Anavar and take 250mg of test and 200mg of EQ two times per week.

Dave I'm allergic to raw almonds, cashews, walnuts, and macadamia nuts. Sounds strange but I'm not allergic to peanuts. Is there anything i can use to substitute the nuts I'm allergic too. Thanks man!!

DP: Extra virgin olive oil is your best choice for a substitution.

What is a good substitue for the salad... Green Beans? Broccoli? And what amounts? (200lb+ diet)

DP: Just eat the salad and stop over-thinking things.

1) You often hear that it takes 2-3 months to see noticeable changes from GH, if I incorporate GH at 16wks out from a show will it help me lose fat immediately, or is this more of a gradual process?

DP: It's gradual.  If you take 2-4iu's per day it'll aid fat loss and indirectly help you retain muscle because you'll do less work for the same results.

2) What do you think about Insulin use for cycles? Ive heard its the "strongest anabolic hormone available" making it the most potent builder for mass when used in your mass cycles, however, it is often called the "most dangerous" because it can kill you - - do you believe insulin should play a role in the avg juicer's arsenal, how so, what protocol, should we use with GH and IGF-1, - or should this be left to very advanced top tier amateurs looking to turn pro?

DP:  Unless you have a superior metabolism, insulin will make you fat and bloated.  Be sure that you really need it.  Don't just try it because you heard it's great. If you can gain weight without it, then leave it alone.

What scientific studies, articles, and/or medical journals can I point my idiot friends to that keep on telling me that "roids will cause birth defects and permanent genetic changes" in users.. who barely train, but think because they took one biology class in college they can comment on the exact science of androgens and the science of endocrinology.

DP: Search the web.  There is a ton of information on the effects of steroids.

I know you are not a fan of orals, but surely they must have their place, right? What about for mass cycles - anadrol, and d-bol - seem to be touted as the best for rapid mass cycles. Arnold lived off of dbol! To what extent do you believe orals should be part of a mass cycle and under what protocol?

Dave, I am on your cutting diet and I only get to train 3 times a week (once a day) because of my crazy work schedule. I am not looking to compete, but want to drop body fat.

My question is, is weight training HIT style 3 times a week enough to keep muscle while burning fat? Btw, I always end my workouts with low intensity cardio for 20 mins.

DP:  I would recommend 5 sessions per week, but you have to make the most of what you have.  Those 3 sessions have to be intense and you have to get the most out of each rep.

DP: If you're dieting, then you're going to have a hard time staying out late.  You only get 6 meals per day and you need to sleep to optimize your performance.

A quick question, i am planning on running Test E 500mg wk for 10 wks as my first cycle, in your opinion if this was your first cycle what would you do in terms of HCG, Ai,SERM etc..throughout the cycle and PCT.

DP: The first cycle I ever did was Primobolan and Winstrol.  As for PCT, check the thread I posted my entire protocol.

My question is Dave, what do you think about taking a Brewers Yeast product as a cheap & natural source of amino acids & b-vitamins??? I read some old-school book that suggested using it as its packed with aminos and b-vits is natural and cheap.

DP: It's garbage. It would be like trying to put crude oil in your car.  A quality whey isolate like my ISOLYZE protein is the purest source of aminos you can find.

Dave, where in the hell can i find Mac oil? I've looked for it in supermarkets, Wal-Mart, online and can't find it. I checked on Species.com but it wasn't in stock. Online stores usually sell it expensive for a small 10oz bottle. because of this I've been using extra virgin Olive oil but I've been wanting to try Mac oil for the longest time! Any place you recommend?

DP:  Studies have proven that there's no increase in cholesterol if you take in up to 6 whole eggs per day.  Amazingly you get all the extra health benefits of the yolk without any of the negatives.  I would recommend he use 4 yolks and 6 whites for his first meal.

I believe you have stated in the past, women should stay away from test b/c of the vir. effects, but what of this new thinking that low doses such as 25mg/wk for increase libido and other functions for women.
DP: I think it would be wiser of the doctors to give these women 5mg Anavar..............same effect, less virilization!

 

What do you find effective, if not this protocol, for a women with low sex drive and has been using birth control for 17 years. Also has no intentions of stopping.

DP: There is no need for a woman to use testosterone. Stick with low androgens like Anavar.

Dave Steve Blechman made some greta points about the intake of fats blocking prostaglandin production (certain fats -not all fats)... now i know your familiar with how powerful prostaglandins are in terms of both protein synthesis and lipolysis.... now tell me why you don't think that eliminating all intake of anti inflamatory fats isn't a good idea for building muscle ?

DP:  It's all about balance!  Every chicken breast you eat has tons of the pro-inflammatory fat, ARACHIDONIC ACI, in it.........so much that you wouldn't believe it.   Adding a nice balance of anti-inflammatory fats like fish oil and evening primrose oil only adds to the muscle-building and repair process since you need these anti-inflammatory essential fats to repair muscle cell membranes and make certain healthy prostaglandins!

DP: I do some core training on there for abdominal control onstage and for general strength in the abdominal and lower back region.

Can I switch meal nr 4 and 5 so I'll have the protein powder meal after my workout in the afternoon, and then have the salmon meal as my last meal in the evening?

 

One more about the cheat meal: For a female - what's the max amount of carbs you'd recomend?

DP: You can eat the meals in any order.  The cheat meal should be balanced and satisfying, but not excessive.  Don't go over 100g of carbs.

DP: Match up the grams of fat - 1.5 tbsp of PB would match up to 1tbsp of olive oil (extra virgin).

Instead of lettuce can i just eat baby leaf spinach and add the olive oil/vinegar and top sirloin to it? Does the vinegar need to be apple cyder or plain?

DP: Any no-carb vinegar is fine and you can use the baby spinach.

DP: Milk is full of sugar, protein , and fat - diet soda has no calories.  Stay away from the milk.

I´m not a bodybuilder, just a ordinary guy with a busy life trying to get slimmer for this summer. Early 30´s. Natural. Live in Denmark for the moment.

 

Do you have some pointers for me how to shed 10-15 pounds? Remember i´m a busy man only have time to train 3 times a week. A have had success with atkins diet before but I think its a bit extreme. But i do beleive in a low-carb diet. Diet tips for a "regular" guy? Supplements? Specific training/how to train?

I have read that a low-carb diet can make your test levels low - any thoughs about that?

DP: Try my diet listed on page 1.  It's great for all lifestyles.  Get everything you can out of your 3 days in the gym and never let off the intensity.

Have you heard of this Ketotifen? I read that is is supposed to inhibit the down regulation of beta receptors caused when taking Clenbuterol. Is there any truth to this?

DP: It's a waste of money and it makes you tired.

DP: DEFINITLY - just substitute the shake for one of your meals and stay locked on the diet.

Just wondering if a keto diet is something a strongman competitor should use to drop a weight class? I am currently 290 with ~22%BF, looking to drop to about 250 or maybe less if training is going well.

As someone who hass higher bf% than a bodybuilder, does a keto diet fit?

DP: It'll help you lose body fat while maintaining muscle and strength. Ryan Kennelly used it to break the all time world bench press record.

Love the new site... what do you think about transdermals for fat loss??? my wife wants to use them on some of her stubborn areas..

DP: No one has come out with an effective product yet. So far nothing has proved to work locally - it all gets absorbed and enters the blood stream and becomes systematic.  In the end, it's the same as taking a pill.

DP:  Diet soda, crystal light, tea, and black coffee are fine. Stay away from splenda - it has added maltodextrin. Use stevia instead.  Salt and pepper are fine.

You could use regular eggs and fish oil pills - but the eggs are much easier.

Dave a couple guys are talking about benefits of T3 during a bulking cycle on one of the other threads. Does that make sense to you? If so how would you include T3 to add mass?

DP: It sounds ridiculous. Why would you want to waste calories that could be used for building muscle?

Dave- clarification please (because I'm slightly retarded):

1) Are you saying that AFTER the cycle ends, take a reduced amt of Test Enth for 2-4 weeks?
DP:  NO.

2) HCG for 2 weeks AFTER the cycle ends?
DP: YES.

3) Aromatase (love Testolstolyze) 5 pills every day DURING the entire cycle, only the last 2 weeks of the cycle or for 2 weeks AFTER the cycle ends?
DP:  Try 3 pills everyday during the cycle and increase to 5 for PCT.

I'm a type 1 diabetic and pride myself on keeping a tight blood sugar control. Whenever I'm on a cycle though I get really insulin resistant and require a lot more insulin (even while following your ketogenic diet).

 

Do you (or Colette) know of any AAS that don't (or do so minimally) impair insulin sensitivity as much as others? Are there any that actually improve insulin sensitivity?

DP:  All anabolic steroids cause insulin resistance!

DP:  Keep your carbs around 40 and you'll be fine. Keto sticks are very inaccurate and I don't bother with them.

Carl Lenore / Superhuman radio had Ron Kosloff on this week, not sure if you listened but between this guy, and the 20 grams of protein max guy the information on that show is really confusing. I mean I like Carl, but the more I listen the more I hope no impressionable young aspiring bodybuilders are listening trying to gain mass. Just wanted your comments if possible.
DP:  The latest research is showing that 25g protein is ideal to initiate the muscle repair process; however, that doesn't mean that more than that won't help provide the necessary raw materials to actually create the new muscle out of. Connelly makes this distinction as well.  He says that only 25g are needed to tell the muscle to start repairing itself and to restore strength.  However, the truth is that this 25g is not what the body will use to actually make the new muscle protein out of.  For that, you'll need to consume considerably more protein!

I have a question about sugars. I tried to reasearch myself for some time but I dont understand how come its ok to use sweeteners like aspartame like in diet sodas but we cant use maltodextrin? I noticed maltodextrin is in sugar free menamusil and crystal lite, at least the crystal lite poweder packages.

DP: Maltodextrin is not an artificial sweetener - it's a carbohydrate.

Dave, Pork Rinds have no carbs.....I know there not BB food, but will it put me out of ketosis if eaten.....I love the crunching lol.

DP: They won't knock you out of ketosis but they are garbage calories that will halt fat loss.

Hey Dave, I'm 6'1, 185 lbs, only been working out naturally for the past 2 1/2 years (started at a weight of 145 lbs), and am looking to put on lean muscle. I'm interested in your Keto Diet, but also see that you've posted an offseason mass diet. I've heard Romano say that he's gained 20 lbs on the Keto diet, and am wondering if one can normally use the Keto diet to gain muscle while staying lean. Many people say that you cannot do both at once, but I'm interested in your input. Would I just have to add more fats to the Keto diet? Or do you recommend I just follow your offseason mass diet?

DP:  My offseason diet is for fast gains. It's intended to minimize fat gain, but there will always be some.  Romano's results were above average because he had been slacking on his diet and training. Once he got re-focused his body was ready to change.

Dave I am an mma fighter at 511 210lbs and was wondering if you could help me with a diet for my last six weeks of dieting. I have 15 lbs to loose and my diet consist of two whey isolate shakes with a tbsp of flax oil or natrual pb and a meal of 6 organic eggs and 2 chicken and spinach meals with added fats. On does when I am run completly down I will have a bowl of oatmeal arox 36 gram carbs. Keep in mind I do an hour of high intensity cardio first thing in the morning and two hours of jiu jitsu or boxing at night. I know my sport is not your specialty but any advice would help.

DP;  Here is a sample diet for a 200lb man that is weight training, performing cardio for weight loss, and MMA training.

MEAL #1: 6 whole Omega-3 Eggs

MEAL #2: SHAKE:  50g Whey Protein Isolate with 2 Tablespoon of All Natural PB

MEAL #3: 8oz Chicken with 1/2-cup RAW almonds, cashews or walnuts

MEAL #4 (ONE HOUR PRIOR TO MMA TRAINING): SHAKE: 50g Whey Protein Isolate with 2 Tablespoon of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil *

*on non-training days: 50g Whey Protein Isolate with 1.5 tbsp all natural PB

MEAL #5: 8oz Lean Beef with a green salad (no tomatoes, carrots, or red peppers) with 1 tablespoon of Olive Oil or Macadamia nut oil and vinegar

MEAL #6: SHAKE: 50g Whey Protein Isolate with 2 Tablespoon of Macadamia Nut Oil

I'm a 26 yr old natural bodybuilder (don't compete yet). In attempt to get as lean as possible, what's your best approach with cardio? I know you are a fan of low-intensity. That is what I usually do.

Is post-workout, low-intensity best? Just curious to know your opinion on the matter. Obviously i'm trying to retain as much muscle as possible.

DP:  Low intensity cardio is the most effective way to lose fat and retain muscle. Keep your heart rate under 130bpm.  The best time to do it is first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, the second best time is after weight training.

This might seem like a stupid question but are you going to be putting out a magazine now as well as doing this site now that MD is done?

DP;  We have no plans for a magazine - print is becoming more obsolete every day.  But never say never!

What is your opinion of high dose fish oil(50g per day) on a keto style cut.

DP:  That's way too much and you'll throw off the balance of omega3:omega6 fatty acids.  6-8grams per day is plenty.

Dave, my girlfriend is a recovering from anerexia. She is better off now but she has done damage to her body, internal organs and her bone density. I have been researching the use of hGH and IGF for her to try to help reverse the damage done. I have come across much information about how mentally/emotionally IGF has shown great results as well as with the bone density but I was wanting your opinion if it would be effective. She has asked her Dr about it but he only brushed her questions aside. Thanks in advance.

DP:  Most doctors will not prescribe this to a young person.  It's not morally accepted yet.......... However, I'd start your gf on a prudent diet of high protein, moderate fat, moderate carbs and I'd start her on a weight training regimen.  If she's young, her bone density and lean muscle mass will return rapidly (with or without GH).

I've heard some guys claim that Ethyl Oleate based injectables "don't work" for them...is that possible?
DP:  If there's no drug in there they won't work!.....lol

Hi Dave, I am on your diet and I'm just wonder if it matters what I use to "grease" the pan when I'm cooking eggs and the meats? Thanks man and hope to hear your reply.

DP: Use a drop of macadamia nut oil; it adds some great flavor and is not corrupted by the heat.

In the February '09 issue of MuscleMag there is an article on carbs. In the article it states that waxy maize should be ingested on its own and not with protein. For the best results you should wait 15 minutes after taking waxy maize to drink your protein shake. What's your take on this?

DP:  This has been debated a lot and I have seen no practical evidence to support this idea. It just seems like micromanagement to me.  Have your waxy maize along with your weigh isolate and 45-60min later eat a whole food meal.
