What Are Eating Disorders?

DISORDERED EATING

After finishing our interviews and research surrounding the topic of eating disorders, Krissy Chin and I were contacted by many competitors, friends, and family who wanted to share their stories. We decided to include podcasts from Elise Firestone and Leigh Penman to further give insight into this crippling behavior.

In the world of physique competitions, eating disorders don't all come in the same packages. In fact, most suffer from a combination of several different kinds of eating issues. Many actually make up their own disordered eating behavior. We've all heard of anorexia and bulimia, but, what about orthorexia, sham eating, and over exercising? The desire to look a certain way or win a contest can lead to a bizarre relationship with food. When we lose sight of what NORMAL eating behavior is we end up with a love-hate relationship with food.

Leigh Penman grew up in Scotland. She struggled with food at an early age and was committed to a psych ward that was something out of the movie, "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest." She lacked family support and self esteem. She thought the less you weighed, the better you looked. She used weight training and the desire to build muscle to help overcome her life-threatening battle with anorexia. Listen below as Leigh explains how she overcame her disorder!

Elise Firestone battled with anorexia and binge eating for years. One disorder seemed to lead to another. Her desire to be thin was taking over her life. Even recently, her participation in activities such as dance, beauty pageants, and physique competitions has been a genuine challenge for her. Daily, she finds herself tempted to revert back into those terrible habits that she finds so familiar and comforting. . Listen to Elise discuss how she deals with these eating disorders and how she manages her daily life one day at a time.
