Everything You’ve Been Told Is Wrong: Part II

Id18 would first like to thank everyone who wrote me to let me know they enjoyed Part I. Without you guys I would not have the opportunity to write these articles. Thank you again and please keep the comments, thoughts, and questions coming. So here are some more bodybuilding myths:

The only way to get shredded is fish and veggies: While tilapia and broccoli are excellent foods to eat anytime, the tilapia and broccoli diet to get lean is not necessary and honestly is just unhealthy. Your body won’t receive enough nutrition or calories. Your body is bound to go into starvation mode and a catabolic state. Weeks of this type of diet and large amounts of cardio will burn muscle mass quicker than you can imagine!

Higher reps and lower weight: This is a common one I hear in the gym when people start to cut whether it is for a contest or just to get lean. I’m not exactly sure how this one started, because I have never seen Arnold go light with weight and higher with reps to get lean. The myth holds no weight. While there is nothing wrong with higher reps or lowering weight I don’t recommend switching all your training to that style. You will not be pushing yourself and your intensity may be lacking. If you’re still looking to build while cutting, and yes it is possible to build muscle while cutting, then keep the weight high, form strict, and reps in the 6-12 for much of your workout.

No sodium: We all know that sodium makes you hold water, but does it make you retain body fat? The answer is NO. Keeping sodium in your diet is not going to slow down your fat loss or hurt your conditioning on stage. Taking your sodium out of your diet may just hurt your chances at taking home that overall title! Sodium is crucial for transporting nutrients into the muscle and athletic performance. Taking it out will hurt your progress in the gym and may hurt your overall look on stage. Don’t take your sodium out!

Sex lowers your testosterone and will hinder your progress: This one has a partial truth to it. Your testosterone may drop for a short period immediately after sex, but it won’t be significant enough to hurt your progress. Our hormones fluctuate throughout the day as it is. People that have sex on a regular basis live longer and are healthier. So don’t stop dating or tell your wife that sex is not in your contest prep!

That’s Part II of our discussion on popular myths in bodybuilding. I’ve decided that I will extend this article to a 3 part series! You’ll have to wait till next month to read part 3. Please email me your questions and maybe I’ll include the answer in part 3 or in a future article! Hit me up on Facebook.  www.facebook.com/staggstim
