How Much Water and WHY?

You'veglass&splash heard it again and again; but, do you know WHY you should drink plenty of water?

“You must drink lots of water” is a bit cliché I know, but do really know all the reasons why you should be?

Let’s first start off with the role of water in the human body:  The human body is anywhere from 55% to 78% water depends on body size.

Tissues and organs are mainly made up of water:

 muscle is 75% water

 brain is 90% water

 bone is 22% water

 blood is 83% water

Functions of water in human body:

Transports nutrients and oxygen into cells

Moisturizes the air in the lungs

 Helps with metabolism

 Regulates body temperature

 Protects our vital organs

Helps our organs to absorb nutrients better

 Detoxifies

 Protects and moisturizes our joints

As you can see drinking plenty of water is even more important than you probably imagined.  Now, here is a list of some amazing benefits of drinking water:

Weight loss:  Drinking water helps lose weight because it flushes out the by-products of fat breakdown. Drinking water reduces hunger.  It’s an effective appetite suppressant so you’ll eat less. Insufficient fluids can lead to over eating. Your brain does not differentiate between hunger and thirst. If there is a slight dehydration the thirst mechanism may be mistaken for hunger and one may eat when the body is actually craving for water. Plus, water has zero calories and makes you feel full by taking up room in your stomach. This means with no add calories you’ll eat less and feel less hungry.

Healthier skin:  Water helps replenish skin tissue, moisturizes skin and increases skin elasticity.

Better exercise:  Water regulates your body temperature. When your body temperature is good you feel good. That means you’ll feel more energetic when doing exercise. Water also helps fuel your muscles.

Helps in digestion and constipation:  Drinking water raises your metabolism because it helps in digestion. Fiber and water goes hand in hand so that you can have your daily bowel movement.

Less cramps and sprains:  Proper hydration helps keep your joints and muscle lubricated, so you’ll less likely get cramps and sprains.

Less likely to get sick and feel healthy:  Drinking plenty of water helps fight against flu and other ailments like kidney stones and heart attack.

Reduce the risk of cancer:  related to the digestive system, some studies show that drinking a healthy amount of water may reduce the risk of bladder and colon cancer. Water dilutes the concentration of cancer-causing agents in the urine and shortens the time in which they are in contact with the bladder lining.

Now that you are fully imformed about water, I bet your next question is “How much water should I be drinking?”  A very simple question with a not so simple answer, but here is my attempt to explain: The “Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day” theory isn’t too bad to go by, that’s a half gallon a day, but I recommend including ALL daily fluids in that equation because they count too.  Generally, if you drink enough fluid so that you rarely feel thirsty and produce 1.5 liters or more of colorless or light yellow urine a day, your fluid intake is probably adequate. If you’re concerned about your fluid intake, check with your doctor or a registered dietitian. They can help you determine the amount of water that’s right for you.

So, the next time you pick up that glass of high quality H2O remember that it is going to benefit every inch of your body. That alone should help you to enjoy it even more!
