Are You Marketable?

Marketability: Relative ease at which an itemMarketability can be sold at for a price at which similar items are selling.

I’m going to try to keep this brief because I personally have a short attention span and get bored with reading quickly so I don’t want to subject you all to the same experience. A question I’ve been asked many times this season is how do you get published/land sponsors. Everyone wants some exposure and recognition for all the hard work they put into working on their physique. But the question you should be asking yourselves is “Am I marketable?” What do you have to offer to these companies to make it worth it to them to invest financially in you? Can their customers relate to you?

I remember speaking with the Art Director of Ironman several years ago and asked him about this very subject. What he told me was, “if you don’t have an online presence, you don’t exist”. Taking that statement into account, one of our peers asked me earlier today what to do to land sponsors. I had him run a quick test to demonstrate a point. I asked him to Google his name and see what shows up. There was less than a page worth of links covering him and the 2nd and 3rd links weren’t even him. Once he finished that I said google my name and see what comes up. I stopped after 8 pages. I don’t even know what half the sites are that post my info, pictures and videos around the world. I even found one selling my pics as wallpapers (that’s some bullshit since I’ve never seen a dime from whoever those bastards are!).

Now I’m not tooting my own horn, I’m just trying to pass on some advice given to me years ago to create a presence. This didn’t happen overnight. I didn’t just decide they have a new category that I may be able to actually fit into and magically companies started showing interest. This was something built over years. I made a point of keeping a very narrow focus so that my online following was a similarly narrow focused group of consumers with a similar interest, fitness. The simple act of us posting competition or professional modeling pictures online immediately turns each one of us into experts and to some degree celebrities to the people who follow us online.

When companies see that you have a following by people that make up their target market, now they see value. They understand that there will be people that will buy anything you recommend because now you are the “expert”. So make yourselves the expert. Begin to build a following, get very active through any social networking & fitness sites you are a part of to expand your global reach, do it with consistency and network your asses off. This demonstrates to companies you are looking to be a presence for years to come.

Does it help to be in bigger media markets? Absolutely! But this is a very voyeuristic world we live so use that to your advantage. Not everyone has access to media and agents but because a large majority of the world chooses to socialize online it gives every one of you the opportunity to build your brand right from home.
