Keys to Success on Stage

“Nothing Perfect practice makes perfectcan stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” ~ Thomas Jefferson

First, I want to wish good luck to all my Men’s Physique brothers competing for the final 6 pro cards of 2011 this weekend at the Nationals in Miami.  Hopefully Ian isn’t too carb depleted right now to post this before show time. (IAN WAS PERFECTLY FINE TO PUBLISH THIS; HOWEVER, HIS COMPUTER WAS NOT UP TO THE TASK)

It’s been a long, exhausting and exciting year.  We have all trained harder and ate cleaner than any time in our lives in the quest to be named an IFBB Pro.  I wanted to give a few tips to make sure all that hard work didn’t go out the window.  These are things I feel have worked for me as well as learned from speaking with the judges.

1.    Get spray tanned. Don’t invest all the time & money into this only to neglect paying a few dollars more to have an expert tan you.  Without a good tan the lights will wash you out and hide all the things you want to show off about your physique on stage.

2.    Make sure your board shorts fit.  Stepping on stage shouldn’t be the first time you try them on so that they still have the creases in them from being folded up on the shelves at the store you bought them from.  If you don’t think shorts matter try talking to some female judges.

3.    Keep your core tight from the minute you step up to the expeditor to the moment you finally step off stage.

4.    Make eye contact with the judges.  Don’t find one and stare at only them because it may creep them out a bit but scan the judges to let them know you’re the man up there.

5.    Stop trying to make yourselves look small.  Open up when you’re on stage and be big.  This will show off your physique much better than trying to hide your size.

6.    Don’t do any things typical of a bikini competitor such as peeking over your shoulder or popping you ass out.  I’ve seen a lot of guys do both and it only supports the jokes made by the haters when you do this.

7.    Lastly, have fun out there.  This is your time to show off all the hard work you have put in.  A competitor having fun on stage shines through and makes you stand out more than you would believe to the people in the audience watching as well as the judges.

Hopefully that helps a little.  Be strong, be confident and give the crowd a show.
