Meet MP Competitor Joseph Valenzuela

image1Congrats on a great showing!  What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division? I looked at it as a new challenge. I have been involved in sports all my life from five years old to my first year in college. Physical fitness is a big part of my life. I knew I had the muscle and work ethic but not quite the nutrition part. It forced me to learn more about nutrition and how it changed my physique.

Can you tell us a little about the show in which you most recently competed? I had a blast. It was so much fun throughout the whole day. The weeks working my way up to the big day were nerve wrecking but it was so worth it the day of. I remember getting first call out but didn’t know the significance of it until somebody told me. After that I was even more pumped. It was a great experience overall.

How did you feel after pre-judging? It felt great. Like I said before, right after prejudging I learned that getting first call out was the ultimate goal. I couldn’t wait until finals. I was having a great time.

How did you feel about the final results of the show? I felt accomplished. I competed in two classes, novice and open, and placed in both. I went home with two trophies. It gave me great confidence and motivation to go at it again and place higher.

What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career? I believe it should have started a long time ago. It’s simply an aesthetically pleasing look without any extremes compared to the bodybuilding division. What makes it unique is that it’s achievable. It’s the perfect look throughout summer time. It gives me more credibility talking to people about fitness.

Age: 30

Hometown: Anaheim, California

Current city: Orange, California

Years training: 15 years. Freshman year in high school to present.

Education:  Associate of Science degree. NCSF Certified.

Occupation: Personal Trainer / EMT

Favorite type of training: Speed and power training, Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, sprints and plyometrics.

Favorite body part to train: Legs. Increase those boosties!!!

Favorite exercise: It’s a tie between squats and deadlifts.

Rep range: Anywhere from 3 to 30. Depends on what I want to accomplish that day, power training or bodybuilding.

Number of sets: If it feels good I keep going – anywhere from 4 to 10.

Typical workout duration: 90 minutes.

Training split: Push/Pull routine.

Typical daily eating plan: High protein for me is key. I tend to lose muscle fast due to speed, agility, and high intensity cardio sessions. I cycle my carbs around my workouts for the most part. I keep fat to a minimum.

Favorite supplement: I would say Amino Energy by Optimum Nutrition. It tastes great with quality energy, meaning that I don’t crash after it takes effect. Plus it has aminos!!!

What peaked your interest in training? I love it. It’s something that’s a part of me. It’s addicting. If I don’t have it I feel out of place, off balance. I believe it’s a cure for any ailment along with good nutrition. That alone motivates me. Nobody has time to be sick.

Who influences/influenced your training? Always being in shape and then taking two years off feeling sluggish and unattractive. It was missing that feeling of being in shape like running without gasping for air or doing pushups like chewing a stick of gum. The energy and strength influences me.

Sports: Baseball and football

Special interests: Spending time with the fam', going on trips, and taking my fitness to the next level.

image2Physique, fitness, bodybuilding competition history: NPC West Coast Classic and the Titans Grand Prix, Men’s Physique division.

Awards and/or accomplishments: Top 5 Open Men’s Physique [2014 NPC West Coast Classic and the Titans Grand Prix]

Next planned competition: November 8, 2014 NPC Iron Games

What keeps you on track towards reaching your goals? I love the challenge. I enjoy pushing myself to see what I can achieve. The sky’s the limit. You will only go as far as your mind can see. I love that about competition. As a whole, being a better human being and an asset to mankind.

What is an interesting fact or something you would like our readers to know about you? I was born one day after leap day – March 1st. I told my second grade teacher that she needed to go to detention instead of me.
