What do you like best about being a diet coach? Helping clients reach goals that they previously thought were impossible. It’s always been more rewarding to see a client do well in a show than it is competing myself.

What Cardio Type Would You Recommend for Fat Loss and or Pre Contest, High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T) or Low Intensity Steady State (L.I.S.S.)?

A majority of the time it’s L.I.S.S. If someone comes to a plateau, I may incorporate intervals just to change things up.

How do you diet your clients? Using the carb cycling approach, keto?

99% of the time I use a carb cycling approach. There has been a couple, rare occasions that I’ve used keto on someone, but if someone can get lean using carbs, I prefer to keep them in.

5What is your protocol for filing out days prior to stepping onstage?

The last few days before a show is different for everyone. If someone looks good, you shouldn’t change much just “because.” Most females only need 1.5-2 days to fill out, most guys need 2-3 days. It just depends on how they look day to day that last week. I always try to give them a tentative plan a week before the show and change it according to how they’re looking.

What is the most challenging aspect of dieting clients?

There are actually a couple lol. One thing is getting newer competitors to buy into your plan 100%, without second guessing you, or listening to other “gurus” at the gym. Another challenge is having to be brutally honest with someone if they are not going to be ready for a show. I think I’ve only had to do this 2-3 times. But I felt it was in the best interest of the client to pick a later show, rather than to make an embarrassing appearance. And I didn’t charge them extra if they needed an extra 2-3 months. The last thing is just keeping them from flaking out the last couple of weeks before the show. Dieting is so psychological with the roller coast of emotions, that if someone isn’t strong mentally, they’ll sabotage their own prep the last couple of weeks.

What supplements do you recommend the most to your clients?

This is a basic list I recommend. If a client can afford more, there are other’s I recommend but are not a “must.”

L-glutamine

BCAA’s

Green Tea Extract

L-carnitine

Yohimbine HCL

What is the oddest question you have ever been asked by a client?

I’ve had odd questions, but the oddest are some of the “progress” pics I’ve been sent. Or to find out what someone has been doing training or cardio wise. Naked pics of their ass (a dude) claiming they WILL have striated glutes, but they weigh 140lbs, so it really doesn’t matter. Or to find out someone’s cardio was walking a couple blocks to the tanning salon (another dude). Or an up close pic of someone’s legs (a female) to show their legs, but your attention is immediately drawn to the pubic hair bursting out of their undies. The list goes on, but comes with the territory lol.

Do you also provide training programs to clients? If so, how do you determine the best program for each individual?

I do offer training programs, but most of my clients have been training for a while and don’t need help with that aspect. If I see a client is really lacking on a body-part, I may ask to see their current training program and make suggestions to change it.

6What formula do you use to determine how many macro nutrients to give each client?

I don’t really have a formula. I take into account a client’s age, lean body-weight, body-fat, etc., and go from there. I’d rather start them with calories a little too high then taper down, than to start too low have trouble making adjustments. I really don’t think dieting is rocket science. You need a good eye for making adjustments & experience always helps.

Do you have clients manipulate water prior to getting onstage? If so how?

I might change the amount they have, but don’t cut it out completely. I generally taper the intake down on Friday before a Saturday show. But you also have to account for their sodium intake. You need 3 things to fill out well, water, carbs, & sodium. The amount of each will just depend on the person.
