Meet National Level MP Competitor Bradley Martyn

Joining June 18thus today is National Level MP Competitor Bradley Martyn.  Congrats on another great showing!  What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
I had been following bodybuilding for as long as I can remember. When the Men’s Physique division was introduced into the NPC, I decided it would be a great way for me to get the ball rolling and eventually step on stage.

Can you tell us a little about the Competition you just competed in?
My most recent showing was at the Miami Nationals

How did you feel after pre-judging?
After pre-judging, I felt good about what I had brought to the stage.

How did you feel about the final results of the show?
I placed 8th out of a very large class. This was not my best placing at a national level show, however I enjoyed the opportunity to get on stage with a lot of very good competitors. Taking what I learned from this show and applying it to my next competitions is the biggest win in my book, because after all this is a marathon not a race. Always striving to come in better and better!

What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career?
The Men’s Physique division has been such a life changing experience for me already. Meeting and getting to know all of the other great competitors and people in this division is truly a blessing. There is so much positive energy in the sport, which is extremely motivating. Not to mention the competitiveness of the brotherhood that we are creating! It feels good to be a pioneer in this division along with all of the other competitors to help make an impact on “would-be” or “thinking-about-it” potential competitors.
As far as the Men’s physique Division being able to affect my career. I believe it is what we make of it. The ability alone to excel in this sport is such a gift and if in doing so it is able to help better my career as a private trainer, then that is just icing on the cake!

Age: 22

Hometown: San Francisco, CA

Current city: Fullerton, CA

Years training: 8 total.  5 with continual education

Education: Currently attending California State University Fullertonbb.com4

Occupation: Private Trainer/Online Coach

Favorite type of training: Olympic Weightlifting

Favorite body part to train: Legs of course!

Favorite exercise: The Deadlift!

Rep range: This varies often, however I typically lean towards a weight that is 75-80% of my max and focus on total amount of reps, not necessarily a rep range. Beat the books!

Number of sets: 3-5 typically for the larger muscle groups.

Typical workout duration: This varies on the body part I am training and how I am feeling that day. Reading my body is the most important part; I can roughly estimate how long the workout can last given how I am feeling that day. I try to always get in and out in no more than 1hr/30

Training split: Currently I am training based off of “what feels good” and my weak points.
So a typical week looks like this
Monday – Legs/Calves
Tuesday – Shoulders and Tris
Wednesday – Chest and Bis/Calves
Thursday – Back
Friday- Off (Or low intensity cardio)
Sat – Emphasis on Tris/Back
Sunday – Conditioning (pushing a sled, jumping rope, tire flips, some of my favorites)

Typical daily eating plan:
I Followed an Intermittent fasting protocol into my last show. Where I would be fasting for 16 hours at a time each day, and then eat for the following 8 hours, ever 1hr to 1hr/30
During that time my daily meals consisted of predominantly protein, and fats. My body has always responded great to a low-to-no-carb diet.

What peaked your interest in training?
I have always been into weightlifting, whether it be Olympic weightlifting, or bodybuilding style of training. However, the peak of my interest in training is the feeling and satisfaction one can receive from changing one’s body into something that has been envisioned and created in the mind overtime and with the right encouragement!

Who influences/influenced your training?
There are so many people who influence my training. All of my fellow competitors, all of my fans, and all of my clients are all huge motivating factors. Some people that stand out in my mind are my mother, who has always been there for me through the good and the bad times, and my close friend Brandon Gerdes who is my daily training partner, and daily motivator!

Sports:nationalsstage
Football, Olympic Weightlifting

Special interests:
Competitive Olympic Weightlifting, Competitive Powerlifting, Snowboarding, and inspiring others!

Physique, fitness, bodybuilding competition history:
Contest History - 2011
April 16th OCC-8th-Class C
June 18th Southern California Championships-1st/Overall Class C
July 29th USA Championships Las Vegas-2nd Class C
Nov 19th Miami Nationals-8th Class C

Next planned competition: I am still debating which competition I am going to be competing at next year, looking to do the next national level show and potentially a local level show as well.

What keeps you on track towards reaching your goals?
All of the people who believe in me are constant reminders of what I have, and what I will to achieve in my lifetime. Inspiring others is the greatest satisfaction in life, because when your 6 feet deep no one is going to remember what you had, they are only going to remember how you made them feel! This is how you become legendary!

Interesting fact or something you would like our readers to know about you:
I am a really a big nerd and proud of it, I replaced the soda I used to drink while gamming with protein shakes and meal replacements.
