Raechelle Chase's Road to the Olympia: Sleep or Die Trying!

Sleep is the most important aspect to your everyday life. If you are not getting enough, even the smallest of tasks become over whelming and your sanity slowly but surely becomes some what compromised.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that during contest prep this is one of the major issues we have to deal with on a nightly basis. Being too hungry to sleep is a constant and for me this quickly turns into being too tired to even fall asleep and endless nights of insomnia. I know there are supplements out there to help with this melatonin, 5htp, L-Theanine to name a few.

But bodybuilding is an extreme sport and sometimes requires extreme measures. Recently after a 3-week insomnia bender due to a combination of jet lag, hunger and my own sleep issues, I had 2 choices. Go completely mad or look to sleep in the form of a good old fashion sleeping pill until I could get my sleeping patterns regulated.

You don't realize how important sleep is until your not getting any. The side effects of not getting enough on a daily basis will leave you feeling not only completely exhausted but also on the brink of insanity. I am pleased to say that I am sleeping again not watching the clock tick by hour by hour all night long wishing I could just fall asleep as I lay wide awake thinking about the cardio, training dieting and child minding I have at the break of dawn every morning.

IMG_0693 2Sure I hear you say, it's not healthy to take sleeping pills. Neither is getting 2 hours of sleep every night and trying to do what is required to get into contest shape. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. And aside from hitting myself over the head with a hammer to get some sleep, this seamed like a dreamy alternative. After all, my goal at this point in my contest prep, 3 weeks out isn't trying to be the healthiest bunny on the block, my mission is to get lean keep my muscles full and stay sane in the process!

If you are someone that doesn't agree with sleeping pills, don't be so quick to judge until you have experienced 3 weeks of night insomnia right before a show yourself, don't be so quick to say that you wouldn't do almost anything to get some serious shut eye!

I have to say that now that I am getting the necessary sleep that I need each night to rest, recover and not only get through each day, but enjoy each day with my family in the gym and pounding the treadmill. I'm feeling like a million dollars. Thank you Dr. Doo for giving me the gift of sleep!!
