2014 Arnold Strongman Classic Initial Athlete List

The 2014 Arnold Strongman Classic Sponsored by MHP will once again be among the most popular events when it is staged at the Arnold Sports Festival for the 13th time in 2014.

Last year, Vytautas Lalas of Lithuania captured his first major strongman contest victory when he outlasted a field of 10 of the world’s strongest athletes to win the 12th Annual Arnold Strongman Classic Sponsored by MHP.

The victory earned Lalas $60,000 and the coveted Louis Cyr trophy.

Lalas clinched his first Arnold Strongman Classic victory by pressing the 264-pound Circus Dumbbell overhead with one hand five times in the contest’s final event. Lalas also placed third in the Tire Deadlift by pulling 1,117 pounds and placed third in the Manhood Stones by lifting a 540-pound stone for one rep in 10 seconds.

Brian Shaw of Lupton, Colo., finished second and earned $20,000. Shaw set a world record in the Manhood Stones by lifting 540 pounds (245 kilos) three times.

Mark Felix of England, who finished sixth and earned $6,000, set a world record in the Tire Deadlift with an exhibition lift of 1,127 pounds. Shaw and Felix each lifted 1,122 pounds in the official competition. Mikhail “Misha” Koklyaev of Russia was third and earned $15,000, while Krzysztof Radzikowski of Poland earned $10,000 for fourth. Mike Burke of Aurora, Colo., finished fifth and took home $8,000.

The great Mike Jenkins of Harrisburg, Pa., winner over the 2012 Arnold Strongman Classic, passed away suddenly on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013 at the age of 31. The 2014 Arnold Strongman Classic will be dedicated the memory of Mike Jenkins.

2014 Arnold Strongman Classic Events

The Longbar Deadlift
One Rep Max, the same as last year.

The Austrian Oak
Floor to Overhead for Max Reps, with either the Heavy Oak (weighing over 200 kg/441 lbs) or the Lighter Oak (weighing approximately 172 kg/379 lbs).

The Cyr Dumbbell
Floor to Overhead for Max Reps with 273.25 lbs (124.5 kg). The background for this event is that in January of 1892—in front of 5,000 people at the Royal Aquarium in London, Louis Cyr broke Eugen Sandow’s world record by lifting a dumbbell of this weight over his head with one hand after taking it to his shoulder with two hands. After Cyr’s death it was owned by his grandson who, in the 1960s, sold it to Ben Weider, whose son, Eric Weider, donated it to the Weider Museum at the Stark Center in Austin, Texas. The handle of the dumbbell is 1 5/8” cm in diameter. It is much smaller than the Circus Dumbbell we have used for many years at the ASC, and will feel very different, but this year we wanted to pay our respects to the legendary Louis Cyr, a bronze statue of whom is given each year to the winner of our competition.

The Timber Carry

The Growing Yoke
This year we will load our yoke to approximately 550 kilos/1344 pounds and it will be carried a very short distance (approximately 3 meters/10 feet) by each man. Then, at least 100 kg/220 lbs will be added to the yoke and each man who successfully carried the first weight will go in the same order and attempt to carry the heavier yoke the same distance. Then, the process will be repeated with the same increase of at least 100 kg/221 pounds.
