2012 National Junior Championships Review

The final day of the 2012 National Junior Championships ended with a backflip from Kollin Cockrell incelebration of a successful 180 kg clean and jerk and a 1st place finish in the 105kg weight class with a 316kg total.  The National Juniors was contested in Itasca , Illinois from January 27th-January 29th,2012.  In one of USA Weightlifting’s premier showcase events the 20 and under age group put on a show for the crowd.

The opening day of competition was dominated by the Barnes brothers.   Both Darren and Darrel powered through the competition with little resistance.  The only question in the crowd was whether or not the brothers would go on to take down their previous National Junior Records.  While neither were able to best their previous marks Darren (56kg) and Darrel (62kg) separated themselves in their weight classes by outpacing the competition by 50kg and 36 kg respectively.  Ellen Kercher (48kg), Jenny Lam (53kg), and Jimmy McIntyre (69kg) all claimed 1st place totals on day one.
Jenny Arthur stood out from the crowd on the second day of competition.  The beautiful Westin was packed as coach CJ Stockel bounced around the room looking for the National Junior Record book.  Once he gathered the information he needed, he asked the marshal to load 114kg on the bar.  Moments later Jenny stepped on the platform in attempt a Junior American Record clean and jerk.  After a successful attempt Jenny gave her Miss America style wave to the elated crowd.  The second day’s other winners included Phillip Wilhelm at 77kg, D’Angelo Osorio at 85kg, Ashley Koren at 58kg, and Colleen Maher in the 63kg weight class.k
The last day of competition proved to be just as exciting as the first two days as Ian Wilson and Chioma Ameachi showed the crowd that their hype within the USA weightlifting community is well deserved.  Ian Wilson opened up the day with an easy 145kg snatch and on his next snatch attempt he set a new personal record powering up 151kg,  Ian would go on to toss up a 185kg clean and jerk.  After stepping off the stage a little woozy after his second attempt, he came back and just missed a new personal record at 191kg.
While Chioma may not have necessarily felt woozy as she prepared for her time to shine, she was not feeling up to the task when the day started.  Quoted as saying, “she thought she would ‘bomb out’ when the day started”, something must have clicked once the chalk touched her hands.  The powerful Amaechi put the country on notice going into the Olympic Team Trials with an impressive 245kg performance.  On her last clean and jerk  attempt she had 147kg up but could not complete the lift.  Had she locked in 147kg her total would have shot to 250kg and placed her in the top spot heading into the Olympic Team Trials.
