If you could change into a superhero for a day who would you be and why?

If I coulIMG 3715d change into a superhero for one day I’d actually like to be a villianesses, Catwoman. I can relate a lot to Catwoman’s personality because I consider myself a creature of the night. Many people would say I’m quite reserved and mysterious. I also feel like I can relate to Catwoman because I love cats. Sorry, I said it. I am a cat woman!

Cats are cool, detached, and independent. To some, cats may even be just as difficult to understand as women! I can relate to Catwoman because I have a lot of these personality traits. Plus, I love her sex appeal and I’d love to own that sexy outfit!

What made you begin dedicating your lifestyle to this sport?

My Mom and I were considered overweight when I was in high school. I was 17 years old, 5’4” and weighed 170 lbs. My body fat percentage was close to 35%. To improve our health and our lives we decided to embark on the journey to change our lifestyles through increased activity and making healthier nutritional choices. With support from one another we were able to lose over a total of 150 lbs in the course of 3 years! With a slow and steady approach to weight loss through the process of increasing activity, strength training, and making healthier food choices I went from 170 lbs to 120 lbs. Much of my inspiration to change my lifestyle came from my Mother’s will and determination to make the change. I developed more knowledge and support when I started researching training techniques and nutritional advice articles online and from various magazines. From that point I decided that I wanted to be a role model for health and fitness and made the lifestyle change, which I continue to promote to this day. The support that my Mother and I provided one another throughout the process made our relationship grow and develop even more. To this day, we continue to share new fitness and nutritional advice to help us maintain the lifestyle change that we made so long ago.

What approach do you take to dieting...carb cycle..keto?

My diet changes depending on the season. I typically follow a meal plan based on macronutrient breakdown. During a bulking cycle I follow a macro ratio of 50:30:20 of protein-carbs-fats per day. During a leaning cycle I follow a macro ratio of 70:20:10 of protein-carbs-fats per day.

Also, in order to stay sane during contest prep I do carb cycling with 3 days on low carbs (about 30 g/day) and alternate with a high day (about 100 g/day). I find this also gives my body the shock that it needs to maintain a high metabolism and prevent my body from going into a catabolic state.

What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about competing?

I think the biggest misconception about competing is that people think it’s just about aesthetics. True, you want to look good on stage and as a result feel better about yourself but I’ve learned that competing has a much deeper meaning and is something only a small percentage of ths nation can actually do or achieve. It’s much more than aesthetics; it’s a lifestyle and most of all, a sacrifice.

What is your most embarassing childhood memory?

I can’t remember a most embaressing childhood moment, however I do have a most recent emberassing gym moment! I was wearing my new spandex leggings at the gym for leg day. I bought them at the local bargain barn for just MT23Mar14-019a-3140752144-O$5. Bad idea! I was doing squats on the Smith Machine and as I came down toward the ground my pants just about ripped in half!!! Once I felt the draft and rip in my pants I got up and luckily had my sweater with me. I wrapped it around my waist as fast as I could but there was definetly one or two witnesses before I could conceal what my momma gave me! I was so embaressed! Ever since then I test out all my gym leggings BEFORE I head to the gym and make sure I tie a sweater around my waist in fear that it will happen again.

What is the biggest lesson you have learned about YOURSELF during your contest prep?

The biggest lesson that I’ve learned about myself during contest prep is that I’m a lot stronger than I thought I was. I went through a really bad year in 2013. The year started off with a divorce, I lost my house, and then my grandmother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and passed away just a few short months after. I can truly say that most people in my position might have given up on their passions, fallen into depression or worse. I turned everything that was thrown my way into a learning experience that was only going to make me stronger coming out of it. So I decided not to give up on my passion and I pursued my first competition in women’s physique and focused on bulking to improve my body conditioning for 2014.

Although staying focused with all the loss going on around me was difficult, I stuck through it and I’ve learned more about myself that I could have ever imagined going through all of these experiences at once. I truly believe everything happens for a reason. Sometimes life will through us a curve ball, or throw many curve balls all at the same time. It’s not a punishment. It’s a means to strengthen your character and the fact that I made it out alive with my passion and self intact is only more proof that I have the heart, drive, determination and motivation to pursue any goal I set my mind to!

Who do you look up and admire and why?

My mother. My mother is  a big motivating factor for living healthy. Seeing the struggles that she has gone through and overcome in life with divorce, death, and obesity has inspired me to stay strong and persistent through life with my goals and dreams.
