Meet MP Competitor Kyle Lopez

WithDLS04 us today is National Level MP Competitor Kyle Lopez.  Congrats on a great showing!  What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
I originally just started lifting to be bigger and in better shape. Once I saw the new Men’s Physique Division introduced last year, I knew this would be a great opportunity to showcase my hard work.

Can you tell us a little about the Competition you just competed in?
My most recent 2 shows were the NPC Washington State Open and NPC USA’s, which was my first National show.

How did you feel after pre-judging?
At WA State I felt great, I knew I had brought my best yet and it was up to the judges. I had 8 guys in my class. I was thinking at the lowest 2nd place.   At USA’s, I realized very quickly how much more size and thickness I need to compete at that level, ha. I was in a class of 29 guys. I felt great about everything that I brought, posing, and my physique. I knew that I was going to need more size to place higher next time.

How did you feel about the final results of the show?
I won my class at WA State. It was such an incredible feeling to get a win. I was and still am very honored and blessed to have won against some great physiques!  At USA’s I got 4th callouts in my class but didn’t place since they don’t go past 15th.

What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career?
I love the division. I think it’s great for those guys that want to go for a more athletic and balanced look. I think it could open a lot of doors into fitness modeling and being spokes models for companies. Competing and getting my name out there will be very beneficial to progressing in my career in the fitness industry.

Age:Aug 07 - July 12 27

Hometown: Kennewick, WA

Current city: Kennewick, WA

Years training: I’ve been in sports my entire life, but didn’t take this seriously until about 5 years ago.

Education: High School Diploma

Occupation: Advertising Account Planner

Favorite type of training: Heavy Volume

Favorite body part to train: Delts

Favorite exercise: DB Military Press and Side Lateral Raises

Rep range: 8-12

Number of sets: 4-5

Typical workout duration: 1 ½ hours unless I am in contest prep, then I keep my lifting to 45 min and then my cardio.

Training split: My training split varies depending on my current goals. But right now it goes:
Day 1: Shoulders/Chest
Day 2: Legs
Day 3: Bi/Tri
Day 4: Chest/Shoulders
Day 5: Back
Rest Days 6 & 7 then repeat

Typical daily eating plan: Right now I am in my offseason so my meals are very high carb/protein and some fats. I have an insane metabolism, so it’s very easy for me to get lean but hard to put on size. I eat 7 times a day currently. My current plan focuses on a higher carb/fat intake also while keeping my protein very high. I break 4000 calories on a daily basis.

Favorite supplement: Optimum Nutrition Amino Energy Blue Raspberry

What peaked your interest in training?

I ran track in high school, so weights were nothing new, but I slacked off for a while after I graduated. I made a commitment 5 years ago to make a change to my body. I just wanted to be bigger and was kind of “skinny-fat.” I knew it was time to make a change to a healthier and fit lifestyle. I’ve always been an athlete but never looked the part. I’ve come from being as low as 147 lbs to now 215lbs in my offseason and I plan to grow a little more from there. You can view my original pictures on my bodyspace.

Who influences/influenced your training?
I originally influenced myself. I made it about me and only me. Which was ok at first, but I soon realized, it’s not all about me. Honestly, I’ve had the opportunity to grow closer to God than ever before. This healthy lifestyle has taken me out of the bar scene and help me realize where my real priorities should be. Being closer to God has influenced me to change my overall goal. Now I want to inspire others to live a healthy and faith filled life. Seeing people look to me for advice in not only the gym, but in faith and life, keeps me motivated. I want to set a good example for everyone I meet or talk to.

I also have the benefit of working under the guidance of some incredible coaches. Roger and Ally Baker of RAB Fitness. They have truly changed my life. They coach me through everything, nutrition, training and have helped me bring my best physique to the stage. They are an incredible couple who I am very thankful for and blessed to call my friends.

What keeps you on track towards reaching your goals?
Knowing that every action that I take contributes to my long term plans. My competitive goal is to become an IFBB Men’s Physique Pro and step on the Olympia stage! Always working towards becoming a better person and keeping my mind right. When my mind is right, my gym time is right, my life is right. Everything falls into place when my focus stays on Jesus.

Interesting fact or something you would like our readers to know about you:
I’ve been in the same small town my entire life. I only live a block away from my house when I was younger. I’m a big beach bum. I visit southern California every year. And I’m terrified of spiders and snakes, ha.
