Meet Craig Capurso: Class Winner at Bev Francis Atlantic States

We are here with Craig Capurso…Congrats on the big win! 221599_10150159615614476_507654475_6354582_4437754_nWhat made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?

Thanks! I decided to compete to in order to get my face in front of the NPC crowd and sponsors. I've competed in other organizations in similar categories and have had success but the road usually just stops. With the NPC I saw this as an opportunity to grow as an athlete in ONE organization earn an IFBB pro card and have a career at doing something I love.

Can you tell us a little about the Competition you just competed in?

The Bev Francis Atlantic States held in NYC usually draws a good crowd from the past shows I've attended. This night was no different, there were 19 competitors in my class and some pretty stiff competition.

How did you feel after pre-judging?

Competing as a fitness model on stage becomes very subjective to what the judges are looking for and criteria from organization to organization vary drastically. I read the guidelines and thought it was a good fit as I feel I have a naturally balanced look. I made the first call out and that always seems to be a good thing and was in the middle 1, 2 spot. After prejudging my fans said I did well but I remain a pessimist until the shows over I hate going into finals with expectations.

How did you feel about the final results of the show?

I WON, I was pumped! I thought there was some serious contenders on that stage and I am going to have to come in even better shape if I want to repeat at the National level.

What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career?
I am absolutely thrilled that it is here and that it exists in the NPC. I have been competing for a while now and I finally feel there is an outlet for me to show a large audience who I am and be an inspiration to others. I speak later in this interview about my current career but I would love to make my passion and hobby a full time career. I have been sidelined a few times with injuries and I realize I do not feel like myself if I am not training.

Age: 29

Hometown: Bristol, CT

Current city: New York, NY

Years training: 15 years

Education:
Bachelors of Science From Sacred Heart University, Fairfield CT Finance Major with a Minor in Computer Science. Currently enrolled in the AFPA Sports Nutrition Program.

Occupation:
I am an Oil Commodities Trader on the floor of NYMEX/CME. What I do is make two way markets on Derivatives in the Heating Oil or Gasoline Contracts (to Buy or Sell a particular option) for any customers that would call the floor or work and orders through brokers that I trade with. Basically I provide liquidity being a buyer and a seller in the derivatives markets vs Wall St and the Oil Companies.

Favorite type of training:
My foundation comes from football where the main focus was speed and power, however I have come to train more like a bodybuilder now a days. I focus on the squeeze and flooding the muscle with blood for the pump rather than doing what guy from the commercial says "I lift things up and put them down." A lot of drop sets now a days too. When competing we are usually in a caloric deficit so we are trying to just maintain our gains from the off season. This seems to be the way that works best for me at the moment.

Favorite body part to train:
Legs... Men's physique doesn't give us a chance to show them off but they are one of my better body parts. They are the one body part I can train and still get sore week to week.

Favorite exercise: Leg Press
Rep range: 20 split up into 10/10 two different foot positions no rest.
Number of sets: However many it take for me to get to 100 reps, sometimes towards the end this volume set I can only get 8/5 etc.. so I count till I hit 100.

Typical workout duration: 1 hour 15mins

Training split:
Cardio If I need it would be in the AM before work 30-45 mins (LIT).

I switch up my routines often but generally 6 days a week. Monday Chest / Tuesday Back / Wednesday Legs (both Quads & Hams) / Thursday Shoulders / Friday Arms / Saturday Calfs & Abs and what ever else is lacking that week.

Typical daily eating plan: I am big on knowing what my maintenance calories should be and depending on what phase of training I would be cycling my carbs and adjusting my proteins and fats accordingly. I have had as little as 6 meals a day and have used plans that have had 9 meals. I am a believer on the "small portions often" routine.

Favorite supplement:
Waxy Maize easiest way to slam carbs when in a hurry.

What peaked your interest in training? Football was the motivation way back in the day. "Bigger, Faster, Stronger" was the motto. I thought I was going to the NFL while in college and playing semi pro afterwards however reality set in. Although I became a realist I always trained hard and often. I never took time off unless sidelined by injury. I probably over train and one day I will find the right balance but its always a work in progress. I am a believer that you can never know enough because someone always has something new to add that may work or may not. There are many variations to do the same thing and that's what keeps training interesting to me.

Who influences/influenced your training? I think most guys my age grew up watching Arnold films etc so that was certainly an early influence. I modeled part of my career after Frank Sepe getting into the Modeling side of fitness. I am currently working with Victor Munoz to help bring up some of my weaker points. We haven't had an off season together yet and I'm looking forward to seeing what our plans are.

Sports: Football, boxing and wrestling have been bulk of my competitive sports career. I wrestled in high School 3 of the 4 years and got two varsity letters. On the football
White towelside I was a 3 year varsity starter in high school a 4 Year starter in college and a 4 year Captain/starter on my semi pro team after college. I started boxing a few years ago in a Wall St Circuit and got sanctioned as an Amateur and have a record of 2-0. In my training I shed most of my football fluff we can call it and there was a pretty good base underneath. That's when I began to compete in the Fitness Modeling arena.

Special interests: I would consider my sports my interests.

What keeps you on track towards reaching your goals? The drive to better myself everyday. I become fixed on achieving a certain goal and I am not appeased until I reach that goal. quote I find intriguing. =

Interesting fact or something you would like our readers to know about you:
My Boxing name is the Hot Commodity due to the fact that I trade commodities. My work call tag or Badge on the floor is MEAT! Also me and a bunch of other bodybuilders from NYC that are in the NPC were casted for a scene in the movie The Sitter featuring Jonah Hill which will be out later this year on the big screen.
