Meet Tim Staggs: First Place Men's Physique at the Ron Love Classic 2011

We are still getting tons of questions about what type of physique is winning the Men's Physique division.  There is no "one physique" that is the clear and defined perfect Men's Physique at this point.  The standard is currently being established. Tim Staggs brough a great body to the Ron Love Classic this year and won the Men's Physique division helping to establish the "Men's Physique" look.  Want to learn more about Tim?  Read on!

Name: Tim Staggs

What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division?
So far I really like the new division and the competitors winning. I think it gives a lot of guys the chance to compete who don’t want to look like a Pro Bodybuilder. I love competing, but also don’t want to get much bigger.

The one change I would like to see is the board shorts changed to boxer/ brief type shorts. I would love to have the quads and lower half judged and the shorts don’t allow that! I’ve seen some other organizations that have that and I think it would help the negative stereotype that legs don’t matter.

I think this division will help the sport grow and bring in more money for all athletes competing. I have talked with many guys who now believe they can be a serious competitor when before they knew in bodybuilding they would never make it past a local level.

Number of sets: 12-20 per body part

DWt124

Typical workout duration:

45 minutes – 1 hour weight training

Training split:

I typically do cardio everyday during prep

Mon- Back/traps

Tues- chest, abs

Wed – legs

Thurs – shoulders, calves, abs

Friday – arms

Sun – HIT cardio

Typical daily eating plan: I still eat like a bodybuilder and I believe in keeping carbs in the diet. I carb cycle and will eat up to 500g of carbs on a high day.

6-7 meals every 2.5-3 hours

Med - High protein 200-300g

Cycle carbs 50-500g

Low fats 30-50g

Ice cream is the most difficult thing for me to give up during the dieting process and is my favorite cheat.

Favorite supplement:
Besides the boring necessary ones: multi, veggie supplement, calcium/vita D, glucosamine, ZMA… I would say BCAA’s are my favorite during dieting. Nothing exciting about them like a pre workout, but one of the best supplements while dieting in my opinion.

What peaked your interest in training?
I use to be poor and was very skinny, at 115lbs starting high school. So I was picked on allot growing up. I knew I could change that by lifting weights. I started lifting weights and gained size. With the size came confidence and respect. Then I was introduced to bodybuilding in 2001 and have been hooked ever since.

Who influences/influenced your training?
I would have to say Arnold. I still put Pumping Iron in the DVD player all the time. I think it would have been great to go back to those days and hangout/ train with those guys. I now train to outdo myself and to keep sculpting my physique to bring up the lacking parts. My wife influences me to always be my best. She is a great support for me.

Sports:
I did not get a chance to play in high school due to working full time, but I love getting on the courts to play basketball and played flag football for a few years. I like being active and love playing any sport that is high intensity.

Special interests:
Fishing is my biggest hobby. When I have time off you will find me on the lake or near a stream.
