Should Bodybuilding be in the Olympics?

Bodybuilding Olympic SportAs we're currently in the midst of the 2012 London Summer Olympic games, I couldn't help but to think why the sport I love, bodybuilding in the Olympics, when it seems like it would almost be perfectly suited? Well there are several reasons for this one including whether or not bodybuilding is really a sport. We'll go back a little way and analyse how this may or may not happen in the future and check in with the IFBB's current status with the International Olympic Committee.

2012-olympic-medalsWe have to go back to the early 1970's when Ben Weider first petitioned to the IOC (International Olympic Committee) where he was emphatically rejected by then president Lord Killanin. Through the 80's the door seemed to be at a jar with a little more optimism which gave hope to the IFBB that Bodybuilding may one day be an Olympic sport. On January 30th, 1998 the IOC decided to give the IFBB (International Federation of Bodybuilding) "recognised federation" status under a provisional status with the IOC.

Pro, Natural or Amateur?
It seems if bodybuilding is inducted into the Olympics, that it will be under the IFBB and not a natural federation, although drug testing would be compulsory regardless of the federation. The question is still would we see the world's top bodybuilders in the form of the IFBB Pro league, or if it would be an all amateur event much like they have in the Olympics with boxing.

So where are the IFBB situated now with the ICO?
It seems the IFBB are situated in about the same position as they we're in 1998, when they we're first granted their status by the IOC. If we're working off the current timeline from back in the 70's it seems the IFBB makes a push to bring bodybuilding to the Olympic Games every 10-15 years, it's been 14 years since the last rumblings, so you never know we may see bodybuilding in the 2016 Olympic games in Rio, but I wouldn't hold your breathe.
