Anthony Rufus interview - Will he be Australia's first Men's Physique Pro?

Anthony rufus ifbb physique mens daniel repeti photography interviewAnthony made people take note at the 2013 IFBB Western Sydney Championships when he took out the Men's Physique class in what some people might consider to be convincing fashion. Anthony went from being another guy in the lineup and a decent competitor (at FitX & the Australasia Championships in March) to a stand out competitor just 4 months on in July. Read on to find out how Anthony did it...

Rx: Anthony welcome to Rx Muscle! You won the Men's Physique class at the 2013 IFBB Western Sydney Championships when you weren't even on my radar, even though you competed in March at two shows that I did play by plays at. How did you make such big changes in such a short time?

AR: I think those 2 losses really were a smack in the face that there was more to this division then I previously thought.

I made it my mission to pick the brain of every official and judge and make sure that next time I was back on that stage I was going to blow people away.

Teaming up with Nathan Page almost guaranteed that fact and I think we did exactly what we had to do.

Anthony Rufus 2Rx: I noticed you your stage presence and overall presentation was probably the biggest difference, is this something you concentrated on, and how much did Nathan help with this, or was he more in control the physique in terms of muscle and conditioning?

AR: That aspect has to be credited to my wife Tricia. When I jumped off the stage after round 1 at the Australasia Champs she pulled me to the side and said "your dream is being taken away from you on that's stage. You need to smile more, you need to connect with the audience because your not winning right now".

I was so hurt by what she said, so in round 2 I worked everything from smiling to working the crowd and the judges. By that time though it was too late and she was right. So from March till July we worked every single night on my presentation, posing and of course the smile!

She even gets the credit for my awesome board shorts that I think stole the show!

Rx: The combination of your wife Tricia & Nathan have made a killer combination with you nailing your condition, coming in fuller, and improving your presentation out of sight. You mentioned your dream, what is that to you?

AR: Of course I understand there is a process before it ever becomes a reality but I have an opportunity to become Australia's first IFBB physique pro and at this stage it's almost impossible to think about anything else.

I want it more than anything.

Anthony Rufus 3Rx: I love to hypothesis, if you were to turn pro would you travel internationally to compete?

AR: That's what I want more than anything.

Rx: Anthony you are doing the South Pacific Championships this weekend where you will be doing some video of your adventures there, what's next for you after that?

AR: Nationals in October is probably the most crucial comp for me this year. To be crowned Mr Australia physique would be a massive highlight and give me plenty of confidence to chase that pro card and make my dream a reality

I'm really looking forward to my first international comp and can't wait to record some awesome material for you guys.

Rx: Anthony I want to thank you for talking to Rx Muscle today, we wish you the best of luck with your future contests and we look forward to working more with you in the future. Any sponsors or people you want to send a special thanks to?

AR: Yes of course mate thank you so much it was awesome speaking to you.

My sponsors really are a massive part of my success and I want to thank Aussie Supps, Puregg and Life+, and my new sponsor Alka Power.

My wife who has become my presentation coach and of course my coaches Nathan Page and Andy Forbes

My trainer Nader Salib who has been with me since the beginning of my very first comp and still inspires me everyday.

Thanks so much Xavier!
