Spotlight On NPC Bikini Competitor: Tara Slingerland

tara

Category you compete in: NPC Bikini Division

Date of birth: September 27, 1988

Hometown: Circleville, Ohio

Career:

2nd year Dr. of Chiropractic Candidate and 1st year Masters of Science in Applied Clinical Nutrition Candidate aka…professional student.

How does your family respond to your competing?

Even though they are learning about the sport right along with me, my entire family as a whole is very supportive. They went as far as surprising me with “Team T-Sling” shirts at my first competition and haven’t missed a show yet! I was actually shocked at how well they have adapted to my carb-cycling mood swings, kitchen disasters, and the amount of overtime I have had to clock-in at the gym!

What kind of goals have you set for yourself, short-term and long-term?

I have been transforming my body into the himage(3)ealthiest version of itself through weightlifting, nutrition, and chiropractic maintenance for some time now and it has been an ultimate goal of mine to help educate those who are also interested in making the same transition; and where better to start than within the fitness community? Long-term I will be integrating nutrition and wellness in to the clinical setting of my Chiropractic clinic.

What's currently on your iPod?

My current iPod obsession, on repeat, is Calvin Harris’ Summer.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of the bodybuilding world?

I am an animal lover, if I am not in the gym you can find me at the local rescue walking, feeding, playing, and trying to sneak away with as many animals possible!

Do you have a favorite exercise?

Being a bikini girl it is very tempting to say all exercises that involve the glutes but to be completely honest with you, my favorite body part to train is back and my favorite exercise is the wide-grip pull down. A simple tweak to the lats can totally transform the entire look of a given physique. It gives the illusion of a smaller waist and a bigger derriѐre! What more could you ask for?

Competition history:

My first competition was an 8 week fast and hard prep where I took 1st place in the 2013 Julie Palmer Showdown in Dayton, OH. I was then so cleverly convinced by now IFBB Pro Ron Talome to compete with him 4 weeks later at Jim Rockell’s 2013 Rochester Championships in Rochester, NY. I left with the overall bikini title and he took the master’s overall title! Ron Talome recently turned pro at the 2013 Master’s Nationals in Pittsburgh, PA at the young age of 74years old! Ron owns and operates Maximum Fitness here in Seneca Falls, NY. He has become a major mentor of mine in the industry since I made the journey here to New York to pursue my doctorate.

Next competition:image

I will be taking the Junior Nationals stage on the ever so lucky Friday the 13th of June! Wish me luck!

Favorite Fitness Tip:

The #1 unwritten rule of bodybuilding, NEVER make eye contact on the abductor machine! Unless of course you’re looking for a good laugh!

Who would you like to thank?

Oh there are so many family members and friends I would love to thank for so many different reasons! Most importantly I would like to thank those closest to me who may not understand the entirety of the sport but support me 100% and the biggest of thank you’s to my colleague, fellow NPC affiliate, coach, trainer, supporter, and boyfriend Ian Butcher. Without his knowledge base I wouldn’t be sitting with an undefeated record in the NPC! He has pushed me through the most impossible of workouts, has calculated my diet to the exact specifications necessary, and has put up with any stressors along the way!
