Apprime Fit by Michelle Blank Blog #5

Well NY Pro did not go as I envisioned.  I did have a fantastic time and want to thank all those that made that possible with special thanks to my mom, mom-mom, Derek, Ned, Lauren and my coach Tracphoto 3 (2)ey!  I would also like to thank all my co-workers at the training center and my fellow gym members for all their support and for helping me to stay motivated!

The NY Pro went in quite a different direction than expected.  It was the largest Women’s Physique competitor list to date and what a great group of ladies.   The judges went for a bit of a different look at this show than previous competitions, which left some confused.  Part of being in body building competitions is to be judged by others.  With that being said, that does not always mean you will agree with the judges.  Just because you don’t agree with the judges does not mean the judges were wrong.  The results are the opinions of the judges based upon what they are presented with at the time.
I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed in my placing.  I asked to be judged and must except their opinion.  However, I don’t have to let their opinion define me or my experience at the competition.  So what I didn’t do as well as I had hoped.  Am I happy with what I presented?  Truthfully, I know I came in too lean and flat.  My body decided it was a perfect time to speed up my metabolism and I was not able to stay on top of it resulting in looking too skinny and flat. That was the first time I prepared for a physique show and learned some valuable lessons to help adjust my preparation for Toronto.

Also, NY Pro marks the first time I placed lower than I had anticipated.  This allowed me to reflect more on the competition experience and the reasons why I compete.  Since I began competing I have met some extraordinary people from around the world, gone to cities I never would have traveled too, and have been able to motivate and inspire many individuals.  The competitions have not only provided me with all these things, but have also allowed me to share those experiences with my family.  For instance, in New York I stayed at the World Trade Center Hotel overlooking the World Trade Center Memorial.  I cannot possibly put into words what that experience meant for me and how grateful I am to have shared that experience with my mom and mom-mom.   September 11, 2001 is the reason I am Federal Agent and now an instructor at the training academy.  I am honored and privileged to train those that protect our homeland.

One of the extraordinary people I have met during my journey is powerlifter Jim Hoskinson.  I have been working with Jim for the past few months to overcome some injuries and I’m so grateful for all his help.  However, it’s not his training that impresses me; it’s his heart and his attitude.  His story is incredible and his overcoming of his own major injuries is just the start.  Several years ago Jim tore both quads and ruptured his patella tendons during a lifting competition.  He had little chance to walk again.  Jim would not accept that fate.  He trained his mind to overcome the pain and not only regained his ability to walkphoto 1 (2), but became competitive in powerlifting and has squatted over 1,000 lbs.  Again this has not been his greatest feat.  Jim continues to give back to the community through his gym Ironworks.  He has helped individuals from all walks of life to improve their lives and become stronger.  Most recently he has been helping a young man that was in a horrific car accident  which resulted in the man being succumbed to a wheelchair.  Jim has helped this man return to the gym and begin to walk again.  I highly recommend watching the Joshua Vaden Baptism Baptism video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34Yrj1wUoWA&;feature=youtube_gdata_player.

Josh’s story is just one of many at Ironworks.   Many of his members have incredible stories.  They are so inspirational and help to keep my life in perspective and want to inspire more individuals just like Jim.  I am honored to have the opportunity to work with Jim and get to know so many amazing individuals which Jim and his gym, have helped overcome their difficulties and improved their mental well-being through the development of physical strength.

Jim, thank you for inspiring me and allowing me to be a part of your incredible gym!
With that I’m off to Toronto!

Be fit,
Michelle Blank

Jim established Ironworks in 2001 and here isphoto 4 his gym’s credo:
