Now On Stage: Tad the Diet Coach

Diet Guru of The Week!

Name: Tad Inoue (A.K.A. Tad the Diet Coach)tad4

Date of birth: June 5, 1970

Hometown: Las Vegas, NV

Career: Nutritionist and Diet Coach for bodybuidling, figure, physique, bikini and fitness.

Sports background: Played football in high school (very short), swim team, golf, tennis and of course competitive bodybuilder for 22 years.

What do you like best about being a diet coach? I like staying in close contact with the sport I love. I get a high degree of catharsis when my clients compete. I also makes me feel a little prophetic in a sense. I get to teach, instruct and lead others down paths that I have gone and that I am as excited about also.

Competition history: Too many to mention. I have been competing since 1989 in Oregon. Competed all throughout the Pacific Northwest, Maryland, Virginia, and of course California. I have competed several times since 1994 in the USA Championships, North American Championships and now as of last year the Master’s Nationals. Just recently my best placing at the North American and Masters Nationals was 5th and 3rd respectively in 2010.

What Cardio Type Would You Recommend for Fat Loss and or Pre Contest, High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T) or Low Intensity Steady State (L.I.S.S.)? I generally recommend both kinds. Most of this depends on the person and how their body responds. We want the quickest route with the least amount of slowdown.

How do you diet your clients? Using the carb cycling approach, keto? I have used both these approaches. I will use what seems to fit the best for the person. Many people just don’t get along well with all the approaches. Depending on the feed back that I get from the person I will select what I feel is the best course of action at that time. Sometimes that is a keto diet while other times it is carb cycling and still other times it is flat static diet with cheats.

tad7What is your protocol for filing out days prior to stepping onstage? Again this can often change based on the person. But in general I believe in feeding slow releasing carbs and then switching to faster releasing carbs as we approach the final 30 hours before stage time.

What is the most challenging aspect of dieting clients? Often times it is keeping them calm during the final stages of a contest prep. Stress can be a killer on conditioning and if a competitor let’s his or her stress get the best of them they can wreck their conditioning.

What supplements do you reccommend the most to your clients? A good multi pack, vitamin C, creatine, and a fat burner.

What is the oddest question you have ever been asked by a client? If I would come to their house and prepare their meals for them.

Do you also provide training programs to clients? If so, how do you determine the best program for each individual? Yes, but it is only a general guideline. While I am still very specific, I don’t believe that I can be as effective as a personal trainer who is in the gym with each person. So often time recommend getting a personal trainer if they need a program that is more adapted to their specific needs. But what I give them in the program is geared toward the goals we have in mind.

What formula do you use to determine how many macro nutrients to give each client? I don’t use a given formula. I do calculate from BMI but I temper that with what information I get from them concerning what they are currently eating. Since our metabolisms continually adjust and are trying to reach a state of homeostasis, often times those formulas don’t amount to much if a person has been dieting on and off for some time.

Do you have clients manipulate water prior to getting onstage? If so how? Yes, water manipulation is very important in getting the right conditioning and muscle fullness. I tell them exactly how much water to drink and often times when to drink it. It is based on what my eyes see and what each person’s body history with me is.
