The Strength Series, Interview #4: Strongman Ryan Malin

Ryan Malin, age 29, grew up watching the World’s Strongest Man competitions but never dreamed he would be that strong. While playing semi-pro football, the 6’4” 315 lbs. St. George, Utah native discovered he could flip tires! Malin was introduced to Van Hatfield who invited him to try some events. He loved it and has been doing it ever since. Let’s learn a little more about Strongman Ryan Malin!

 

Q: Did anyone influence you or serve as a mentor? 

A: Van Hatfield and Nick Best have helped me a ton!

 

Q: What motivates you? 

A: Pushing my body to see how strong I can really become. What can I achieve... how high is the limit? That is what drives me the most! 

 

Q: Whryan-malin2at activities do you do outside of Strongman? 

A: Anything pool side, hangin’ with my family and our dog, traveling and anything active.

 

Q: What about nutrition? What’s your favorite food?

A: Favorite food has to be steak and mashed potatoes!

 

Q: How much sleep do you get each day? 

A: I sleep 7 hours a day, night owl not a morning person. 

 

Q: How long have you been training seriously? 

A: I have been training since I was 15. I was 6’2”, 115 lbs., so it has been a long time to build up to where I am now. 

 

Q: What are some of the lifts you are most proud of? 

A: My best lift is my Monster Dumbbell press... 235 lbs. 

 

Q: What are the three most important movements for people trying to build strength? 

A: I would say the core lifts are squats, deadlifts, push presses and dips.
