How to Use Advice to Make Improvements

So you have competed at your first showjunior usa's and now you want to know what you need to do to improve. How do you go about deciding what to change? Do you ask the judges for advice and how do you take that advice and use it to improve for your next show?

First I would recommend not asking your friends. 90% of your friends are going to tell you that you should have won and you looked perfect. The first person I recommend asking is your contest prep coach since you have put your trust into them to lead you in the proper direction. If they are a good coach it’s in their best interest to help you improve and to be brutally honest with you.

Once you have done that I recommend asking the judges of the show. Usually you can get their emails and email them with a picture after the show. Most will respond with what they think you should work on. Now this is where the confusion can occur. Let’s say you placed 5th out of 10 competitors and there are 5 judges. Unless all 5 judges had you in 5th you are going to get mixed reviews. This is a very subjective sport. So let’s say that out of the 5 judges one judge has you in 2nd, one judge had you in 8th and 3 judges had you in 5th. Obviously the judge that had you in 2nd is going to say you looked great and not to change much because you are right where you need to be. The judge that placed you in 8th is going to say that you need to be less tight, have better stage presence, and make your waist smaller. The judges that had you in 5th are going to say work on stage presence and your color. So if you took the advice you received from the 5 judges you will need to not change a thing while making your waist smaller, being less tight, and to work on your color and stage presence. The point I am trying to make is it is beneficial to ask the judges for advice, but you need to take all the advice and use your best judgment.

Find a common denominator within all the advice like working on your color and stage presence. Those are 2 things that are easy to change and improving them can never hurt you on stage. Sometimes using common sense while reviewing stage photos and being completely honest with yourself can do wonders for deciding what improvements to make. Whatever you decide to do as long as you are improving your physique you are on the right track and you have already succeeded.
