Fitness was always something I loved and really excelled at. I grew up a three sport athlete, so being physical was what I lived to do. Being a professional baseball player was my only option as a young man. After having a couple major arm surgeries my dream was gone, needless to say I was crushed! Fast forward years later and the love to compete physically was still imbedded in me, so I searched….then I found the fitness industry.
Before all this was even a reality, I started searching and studying the top guys in the game. I knew I wanted to have the success they did for myself, but how? My body needed a lot of work and I didn’t know anyone in the industry. If I wanted this I knew I needed to do two things:
1)Make a decision to go all in
2)Believe in myself
The decision didn’t happen overnight, but when it did it was on.
May 28, 2012 was the beginning. I met a friend at the gym and he told me about the CAL, a NPC show. I found out about a month before the show and was so excited to take my first step. Looking back on it I did so many things that I wouldn’t do now, but that’s the beautiful thing about this! We learn and we grow with the experience. I ended up placing at the bottom of my class in that show and I was crushed. With that said here’s the best advice I could give…. Believe in yourself and let temporary defeat serve as motivation. At that point it could have been very easy to quit and walk away but I didn’t. No matter what anyone says or how bad it looks on the outside, if you know you can do it, you can! Two weeks later I did another show. I hired a coach to learn from and took 4th in a very tough class, I was so happy.
Competing was a great first step and I knew I was ready to start shooting and going for the covers. Once again it took research and a game plan to get it. I knew I had the product I just needed the photos and to get them in front of the right people. James Patrick, the one who shot the IRONMAN Australia cover called me and let me know he would be in town and wanted to shoot. I researched him, he was shooting a lot of covers and I knew this gave me a great opportunity to reach my goal. We took the shot in the beginning of September and the cover is on the shelves this month.
Here’s what I want you to know if getting a cover is your goal. It will bring very temporary happiness but it’s not the end all be all. What it’s great for is giving a platform to help teach, train and inspire others so they can reach their goals. Without a doubt serving others is what this is all about. It’s about people as a whole, not myself on a cover. But the real #1 reason for this is my Son. I’m so proud to do this for him. I get emotional writing this and it’s really hard to put into words. If you’re a parent you know exactly what I’m talking about.
A year ago I had zero to do with this industry. By believing in YOURSELF and making a decision to sacrifice and go all in, YOU can truly move mountains. I’ve read IRONMAN my whole life and to be on the cover is pretty damn awesome.
