Meet the Man in The Shorts: Marfred Suazo

Breakdancing, marfred 3black belt DJ? You must mean Men’s Physique competitor, Marfred Suazo!

Congrats on a great showing! What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?

Thank you. I’ve always been athletic, and since a young age I’ve always liked to challenge my body in different sports, Men’s Physique being no different. It was another sport that I was excited to prove to myself I could do; the physical demands are intense and I was up for the challenge.

Can you tell us a little about the show in which you most recently competed?

The most recent was 2012 Team Universe, it was very overwhelming and exciting at the same time; greatly impressed by all the physiques competing. I was very happy to share the stage with such great talent. Although I had ACL surgery a few weeks prior to the national show I was still able to push through the agonizing pain and bring a pretty good package to the stage.

How did you feel after pre-judging?

Felt good after prejudging, but knew that the next time I stepped on stage I would need to bring a bigger package. Above all I really enjoyed the experience.

How did you feel about the final results of the show?

I was proud placing 10th in a national show, especially going through it with a surgery, but this year I am definitely bringing a better and bigger package to the stage.

What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career?

Those unfamiliar with the new division should know that competitors are judged by muscularity, body composition, stage presence and personality. Much like bodybuilding but competitors are wearing board shorts. I think the division will take off in popularity as it gives fans and viewers a more achievable/pleasant physique to stare at. Let’s not call it Men’s Physique, to me it’s more like a battle of fitness models. I would like this competition to help me with my fitness career, as a personal trainer, and a fitness model to continue to help inspire others to attain their maximum fitness potential.

What peaked your interest in training?

Pictures of Frank Zane. Impressed by Frank Zane’s physique standing at only 190 pounds, he was aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Zane concentrated on stellar lines and attention to detail to beat jaw-dropping mass and was one of the few to ever pull it off. Zane garnered three straight Olympia titles by out-conditioning the competition and changed the bodybuilding sport forever, being able to win at only 185 pounds with 18" arms, but an unprecedented 29" waist. If there was ever a guy who had a V-Taper, it was Frank Zane.

Who influences/influenced your training?

Initially it all started with my sensei Norman Smith. Through his tough and vigorous training methodology he taught me the value of inspiring others. Dedication, determination, and focus is something he preached amongst other things. I learned early that what you practice is what you become.

What keeps you on track towards reaching your goals?

I’ve always said that a slight shift in perspective will shift what you see. One empowering way to make additional progress towards your goal is to focus on how far you have come rather than how far you have left to go.
