Meet MP Competitor Ed Honn

Congrats photo (5)on a great showing!  What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?

I was always a fan of bodybuilding, but my body type and look are more suited for success in the men’s physique division.  It’s hard not to consider competing when several of your co-workers (I work as a personal trainer) have competed, and everyone continually asks you, “so when are you going to do a show?”  Prodding from my co-workers and my current coach (national-level bodybuilder Eric Posejpal) pushed me into my first competition.

Can you tell us a little about the show in which you most recently competed?

I most recently competed in the NPC Jr. Nationals competition in Rosemont, Illinois. It was right in my backyard so it was an obvious choice for my third competition.

How did you feel after pre-judging?

I knew going into this show that I was not going to bring my best package to the stage, so I knew after call-outs where I stood in relation to everyone else. I gained valuable experience and knowledge of what it takes to secure a first place finish.  After pre-judging, I was dejected but excited to start brainstorming for my next competition.

How did you feel about the final results of the show?

I knew I didn’t bring my best condition to the show, so I wasn’t completely disheartened with my final placing (16th).  I would have like to see what could have happened if my conditioning was spot-on.

What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career?

I love the men’s physique division; it opens up a pathway for individuals to compete that might not have been best suited for or desired to compete in bodybuilding.  I have gained many inquiries regarding my personal training business as a result of competing, and I hope it continues to grow as I progress in the sport.

What peaked your interest in training?photo

Growing up I got involved in various sports, resistance training was a way to become bigger/stronger/faster.  Track was my favorite sport in that one is basically working out the entire season.  During college, my interest in bodybuilding started to grow exponentially until I finally sought to pursue a career as a personal trainer.

Who influences/influenced your training?

I’m lucky to work as a trainer in a great atmosphere with many other fitness professionals.  There is never a shortage of fantastic lifting partners who give me fresh ideas on new workouts, or those club members who can always give a few words of wisdom or motivation.  Earlier on in my fitness career, I was influenced in my training by Frane Zane, Steve Reeves and other classic bodybuilders.  Now my influences come from co-workers, classical bodybuilders and current pros.

Sports: Currently just bodybuilding. I still do track and football inspired conditioning workouts when I get the urge.

Special interests: Winning eating competitions, reading the daily comics and generally hating the Green Bay Packers.

Physique, fitness, bodybuilding competition history:

NPC Mid-Illinois Bodybuilding Championships: 3rd place, tall class.

NPC IL State Championships: First place, class B. Overall Physique Champion.

NPC Jr. Nationals: 16 place, class D.

Awards and/or accomplishments:

Aside from my athletic and competition awards, I take great pride in helping my clients succeed.  One of my best clients, Gabriel Gancarz, recently lost over 30% body mass in a weight loss competition held by my fitness club.  He came in third place nationally and won a cash prize. My greatest accomplishments are when my clients reach and exceed their fitness goals.

Next planned competition:

     Midwest Ironman, November 2013.

What keeps you on track towards reaching your goals?

Never being satisfied.  Bodybuilding is a sport where one strives to reach perfection.  There is always room for improvement. Staying on track and constantly creating new goals keeps me focused and motivated. Right now I cannot rest until I reach IFBB Pro status.

Interesting fact or something you would like our readers to know about you:

I am an aspiring hamburger food critic for the Chicago Suburbs.
