Meet MP Competitor Patrick Mahoney

WithPatrick Mahoney 1 us today is MP Competitor  Patrick Mahoney.  Congrats on a great showing!  What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?

I have always been interested in Physique sports and had always been interested in competing. When they started the Men's Physique Division I knew it was the perfect opportunity for me.

Can you tell us a little about the show in which you most recently competed?

The last show I competed in was the 2012 Kentucky Muscle held in November. It was a great show with 35 Men’s Physique Competitors. It gave me the opportunity to compete against a larger field of competitors.

How did you feel after pre-judging?

I made first call out so that helped ease some of my nervousness. The competition was terrific. I was just hoping I was what the judges were looking for.

How did you feel about the final results of the show?

I felt great! I was very honored to be able to win my class and the overall against that type of competition. This was proof that all my hard work paid off.

What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career?

I think the addition of the Men's Physique Division is awesome! It opens up so many doors and gives more people the opportunity to compete and work towards a goal in the sport that they love. As a personal trainer it can only benefit my career. I believe it will help me reach out to a different population and it provides me with another tool to use as motivation and inspiration for others.

Age: Patrick Mahoney 228

Hometown: Louisville Kentucky

Current city: Louisville Kentucky

Years training: 12

Education: B.S. Exercise Science from University of Louisville

Occupation: Professional Personal Trainer

Favorite type of training: Split Training and HIIT Cardio

Favorite body part to train: Really enjoying my leg and back training sessions

Favorite exercise: Deadlift

Rep range: Anywhere between 2-15 reps depending on the workout.

Number of sets: Usually 3-5

Typical workout duration: 60-90 minutes

Training split

Chest/Back

Shoulders/Arms

Repeat

Typical daily eating plan:

For the most part I like to keep my macros at 40/40/20 ( carbs/protein/fat). This however will vary a little as I get further into a contest prep. My body does not naturally like to hold onto a lot of muscle, so I have to make sure I give it plenty of good calories to maintain it.

Favorite supplement: Good Quality Whey Protein (huge fan of Gaspari products)

What peaked your interest in training?

I was always very tall and skinny as a kid. I was looking for a way to add muscle and strength. So I started lifting weights and I was hooked right away.

Who influences/influenced your training?

As a teenager I was influenced by the guys I was reading about in the fitness magazines. I would read everything I could about training and nutrition in hopes that I could one day look like they did. I loved looking at photos of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Frank Zane, Serge Nubret, and Bob Paris just to name a few. I would spend hours reading about their training and diet strategies. I still look up to these guys for their accomplishments and their ability to inspire others.
