Q&A with Dave Palumbo- March 3, 2009

I've been doing a little research of the Classic Keto Diet by John Hopkins university. I am simply amazed at how is help epileptic children. I also read that the ketones could help in a heart attack patient because the heart can use to ketones while being deprived of O2. Also how there is an increase in mitochondria within the brain and helps protect the nuro system. It also said that the body becomes acidic, and causes some bone breakdown? Again this is the classic keto diet with 90% of calories coming from fat. I know you have a list of recommended supplements while on your diet. But what would be the most important ones take? Top 5?

DP:

•1. Fiber supplement (containing soluble and insoluble fiber) such as FIBERLYZE

•2. Fruit and Vegetable Extract such as JUICE PLUS+: https://www.juiceplus.com/nsa/pages/Home.soa?site=dp02724

•3. Omega 3/6 with plenty of EPA and DHA (Omega-3) and GLA (Omega-6).   A combination FISH OIL/EVENING PRIMROSE oil supplement is ideal (3000mg Fish oil and 2600mg Primrose oil per day):  Try OMEGALYZE. https://www.speciesnutrition.com/order/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=57

•4. Calcium/Magnesium supplement to help neutralize excessive acid waste (I like CORAL CALCIUM)

•5. Joint Repair supplements containing high dosages of Glucoseamine Sulfate and MSM (4000mg of each).  My ARTHROLYZE formula provides those dosages in a 30 day supply: https://www.speciesnutrition.com/order/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=41

____

Dave, what is your take on digestive enzymes? Do you think they're really beneficial, and if so, wouldn't taking them on a regular basis cause your body to produce less of its own?

DP: They're not necessary if you don't have deficiencies or disorders.

____

Dave, when following your diet would you recommend still having the two waxy maize shakes even if it isn't a training day?

DP: Yes, just add 1 tablespoon of macadamia nut oil (now sold at www.speciesnutrition.com) to each shake.

____

Hey Dave, I have a 20lb bag of Dextrose, can I replace that for Waxy Maize?

DP: I don't recommend it; you shouldn't use an inferior product just because you have it.  If I thought dextrose was useful for building muscle I would have used it in my CARBOLYZE.  It's a lot cheaper.

____

Dave, will you and John start videos on this website similiar to the In The Trenches featuring IFBB pro's and also NPC competitors?

DP: We plant to do some more segments at Bev Francis' Powerhouse Gym.

_____

Straight to my question :

For drug-free bodybuilders how much can I exceed my BASAL METABOLIC RATE in terms of CALORIES in order to minimize fat gain while trying to maximaze LEAN muscle mass ??

* Any advice on macronutrient manipulation Dave ?, I'm just interested on the caloric intake.

One bodybuilder friend of mine here told me a 500 calories surplus would be enought.. than cut back after a couple of days to minimize the fat gain, you agree or you think 500kcal surplus it's too much for a natural dave ?

The reason for this question is because I'm not following any diet, besides tracking protein intake and my caloric intake as well.. I'm 5'7, 19, 6-8% body fat.. is this quite commom or i'm a little gifted ?

To finish off : Congratulations for this website Dave, The opportunity you are giving to people around the world to learn from the best is amazing

DP:  You're too wrapped up in numbers.   Take my mass gaining program and try it out for 2 weeks and judge your progress.  Then make changes based on the results.

_____

Is Andriol good for women Dave?
DP:  Andriol is testosterone undecanoate.  Women should not use testosterone.

____

Just got done listening to the latest heavy muscle radio. Dr. Connelly made it clear we should avoid fructose. I'm slighlty confused as to what forms of fructose. I wouldnt imagine he is saying to avoid fruit, maybe just eating tons of it? Also Ive been usuing a relatively cheap whey from American Sports Nurtrition "American Whey" and its sweetened with fructose. I emailed the company rep and it was useless, he just emailed me the label. Is this the kind I want to avoid or are there variations?

DP: there are no variations of fructose; it's a type of sugar.  Some fruits have more fructose than others and those are the ones to avoid.  When fructose is concentrated into HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, it becomes deadly!

____

Can one take Glucophage before their carb up meal to usher themselves back into ketosis quicker on your cutting diet?

DP: it isn't necessary.  Let the cheat meal run its course and allow your body to suck up the calories.

____

How long does it take for muscles like bicep/tricep/trapz to break down oil?,as example: If i inject 1 ml oil based gear like cyp into bicep, how long will it take approx for the muscle to break down the oil untill it dissappears?

DP:  It will take about a week for the oil to disappate and all the steroid will be absorbed into your bloodstream.

___

BIG DAVE, whats the silliest/ dangerous thing you ever done regarding AAS ?

DP:  I always did a lot of careful research and planning. I'd like to think that I never did anything dangerous; however, when I first experimented with insulin back in 1994 (no one had ever tried it) so I had to try to figure out how much to take.  I wound up taking 40 units of Humulin-R and I had to eat non-stop for the next 8 hours.  It was crazy.  My blood sugar kept dropping. I must have eating about 8000 calories.

____

Dave, what foods to eat and what kind of supplements to take to better liver health?

DP: Liv.52 is a pretty good supplement for liver health.

____

Hi Dave as you know ive been following your diet, with success, my question is, I always before had a during training shake, (not while in your diet) for example volumaize that i get from my sponsor, that would spike insulin of course but after a cruel training session ,those nutrients would feed muscles and sugar levels would be down again, that makes sense??

DP: You can't add the post workout shake because the carbs will take you out of ketosis, which will give you unstable blood sugar, low energy, and cravings.

____

I was wondering if you think it would be more beneficial to have your cheat meal early in the day so that you'd be able to 'burn' some of those excess calories off, fuel workouts etc, instead of eating it late at night and then going to sleep with all that extra calories/carbs... of course I know that I would have to control the meal so that I could be strict on the diet for the remainder of the day... thanks

DP:  If you burn off the cheat meal too quickly, it doesn't serve the purpose it's meant to do-overload your body with calories and carbs and shock your body to continue burning fat.

_____

How much Testolyze should someone use if they want to stop gyno mid cycle?

DP: Try 4 pills per day until the symptoms are gone.

____

I've always wondered in the off-season for guys who compete at the Olympia what other than AAS, insulin, igf, hgh would they use? I'm sure they do AAS every other day as opposed to loading it up one or two times a week, but was just curious how they get so round and so full and come in bone dry on stage at like 250-275 lbs. Are there other things out there that most in the bodybuilding world just haven't heard of or just don't know about that these guys have that they use?

DP:  You would have to ask them...lol.  You need to know that to get to the top level of the sport you need to be a genetic freak in addition to working hard day in and day out.

____

Dave, sorry if this has already been answered, but how detrimental is one shot of whiskey once every 1 or 2 weeks while on the low carb days?

DP:  The calories are empty and a waste.  You will not get optimal results drinking alcohol.

___

In this recent Q&A Dave you say it's about calories! And although you're right about an increased proportion of calories from fat than carbs at lower (less than 60% vo2max), it's not the whole story. When working at higher levels you also burn more grams of fat per minute than at lower intensities, it's just you also burn more carbs.

I think the key is to maximize the trade off in fat and carbs and that sweet spot seems to be at about 65% vo2max or 75% max HR. This makes the sweet spot about 143 for a 30 year old.

I think the bigger concern of working at higher intensity is muscle damage and causing an adaptive response in the aerobic system which will require protein to help the adaptation of associated cell and enzyme systems!

What are your thoughts?

DP: Good job with the research, but I know from the anecdotal experience that the only way to ensure you don't burn muscle is to use low intensity cardio.  If you start increasing the intensity, you'll find that you start to lose muscle and cause low blood sugar.

____

Dave, I have had very good success on your diet. Been on it for 9 weeks now and i am stronger and leaner than I have ever been. My progress has stalled over the last 2 weeks. I have not lost a pound. Diet is your 200lb diet and I follow it religously. I lift 5 days a week and slow cardio 7 days a week for 45min. I have been taking clen also. What is the best to modify and how?

DP:  I'd add 15min of cardio and up your clen by 20mcg.
