Exercise ReduceRAs Inflammation From Rheumatoid Arthritis

Chronic inflammation has been identified as one of the calling cards of a diseased state in the body. The damaging effects of inflammation have been tied to a number or chronic and debilitating diseases such as IBS, heart disease, hypertension, and arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a particularly debilitating autoimmune disease characterized by chronic painful swelling of the joints and often leads to sufferers becoming wheel chair bound due to the eventual deterioration of the joints. New information being released from the European League Against Rheumatism Annual Conference has found that exercise shows the ability to control systemic inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis. For the study researchers injected healthy mice with lipopolysaccrides which are known to trigger a protein that causes inflammation and is typically found in high levels in RA patients. Researchers found that by exercising mice both before and after injections appeared to have a mitigating effect of the production of inflammatory proteins for up to 24 hours. This leads researchers to believe that by incorporating daily exercise suffers of RA can significantly limit or prevent the amount of inflammatory damage caused by the disease and potentially improve quality of life.

High Protein Diets May Protect Against Stroke

High protein diets have been vilified by grossly misiHighProteinnformed nutritionist and members of the mainstream media as potential dangerous and have been linked by hearsay to causing kidney disease and elevating the risk of heart disease with increased red meat consumption. Now a new study conducted by the Nanjing University School of Medicine in China has found that high protein diets show a protective effect against stroke according to researchers. The diet analyzed seven studies that totaled over 250,000 participants. After analyzing the data researchers determined that the people who consumed the highest amounts of animal protein were 26% less likely to suffer from stroke compared to those who ate low protein diets. They also found that for every 20 grams of protein consumed risk of stroke continued to drop, and they noted that if everyone were to consume that level of protein in their diet that it would prevent up to 1.4 million deaths each year. The researchers also noted that animal proteins, which typically tend to be more complete, reduced risk of stroke by 29% while vegetable proteins which typically traditionally do not contain one or more essential amino acids showed only a 12% reduction in risk factors associated with stroke. Although the study doesn’t take other dietary or lifestyle modifications into consideration, it does appear to prove that higher protein diets independently possess healthy benefits far beyond their ability to build muscle.

Omeomega3ga-3 Fatty Acids Slow Macular Degeneration

EPA and DHA are the active components of omega-3 fatty acids. Dietary and supplemental omega-3’s have been associated with a wide range of health benefits including improve blood glucose regulation, reduced systemic inflammation, improved brain function and a number of other conditions as well. A recent study that has been released by a team of researchers at Massechusetts Eye and Ear Research Institute have discovered that omega-3 fatty acids can slow or prevent the growth of age related macular degeneration. For the study researchers gave three groups of mice diets rich in either omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids while a third group that received no special diet functioned as the control. Each group was then subjected to laser eye treatment known to cause macular degeneration. The team found that the group that received the omega-3’s showed better immune response and greater suppression of inflammation surround the blood vessels of the retina. This is the first evidence to show that omega-3 fatty acids can significantly reduce or prevent the onset macular degeneration, and researchers believe that supplementing with the versatile compound as we age could be the key to preventing vision loss that is expected to impact nearly 50% of the elderly population by the year 2020.

Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Increases in All Cause Mortality

The ability of vitamin D to impact biological processes has garnered a tremendous amvitamindount of attention recently. Keeping adequate levels of vitamin D (30 ng/ml) has been linked to improvements in blood glucose regulation, brain development, alzheimers prevention, development of cancer, and a myriad of other factors as well including gene expression. The evidence for daily vitamin D supplementation has grown even stronger as a new study as linked low levels of vitamin D with increases in all cause mortality. The meta analysis compiled data from either different studies that contained over 26,000 participants. The data was analyzed to determine the link between vitamin D and death from all causes including cancer and heart disease. The team discovered a direct link between low levels of vitamin D and death from cancer and cardiovascular disease even in patients who had no history of disease. The team belives that their results show that vitamin D may play a very important role in the survival of cancer patients whose cancer I caught in early stages. Previous research has demonstrated that vitamin D has the ability to trigger the self destruct mechanism in cancer cells that is typically inhibited by their irregular growth and formation. Given the growing mountains of evidence and the low cost of vitamin D supplementation, there is no reason not to include this versatile steroid hormone as a part of your daily supplement regimen.

Leptin leptinReverses Diabetes

Leptin has been called the master regulator of hormones for its ability to impact insulin, blood glucose, and the hormones that control hunger. New research conducted by Yale University has discovered that providing leptin to deficient rats with type-1 and type-2 diabetes not only improves blood glucose regulation, but it also has shown the ability to completely reverse hyperglycemia that results from diabetic insulin resistance. For the study researchers gave leptin deficient rats an infusion of leptin to restore blood concentrations to normal levels. After receiving the leptin infusion both groups were reported to show significant improvements in satiety, metabolism, and a large decrease in adipose tissue in both the liver and skeletal muscle. Scientists believe the new information will help lead to the development of leptin therapies that can ameliorate the effects of metabolic syndrome and obesity.
